SARA GRABS A COUPLE OF WICKETS FOR FRODINGHAM

BY GLEN SANDS

Luddington bowled and fielded very well against Appleby-Frodingham on Wednesday but once again were found wanting when it came to their batting as they slipped to another Broughton Evening League defeat.
The Steelmen batted first on a humid evening on the Isle and soon found themselves one down when Matty Fowler was caught by Danny Taylor off Jonathan Wroot for four with the total on 15. A further four runs had been added when Kieren Lindley was caught by wicketkeper Oliver Coulman , again off Wroot , for eleven then Zen Akhtar and Kieren Watson put on twenty valuable runs before the former was caught by Wroot off Arron Curry for nine.Batsmen were not getting value for shots due to the damp outfield which saw them attempt to hit out and that brought the demise of youngster Brown who was spectacularly caught one handed on the boundary by Curry off Alex Fletcher who temporarily lost the ball in the sun drenched sky ! Watson had made an impressive 28 when he was fifth man out , caught well in the deep by Darren Clark to give Fletcher his second wicket then Jack Harrison was caught by Jamie Arrowsmith off Curry as Frod stuttered to 79 for 6 in their 14 overs.
As was the case  in their last home game Ludd made a woeful start to their innings and it all began when Oliver Coulman was run out when attempting a third from a Darren Clark pull to leg. Andy Lawson was bowled by Liam Grimes without scoring then Josh Bramhill was trapped LBW by Jack Forrester to le the Isle side on 6 for 3 and a long way from their target. Clark's one scoring shot had brought him two runs in the run out incident and he was next to go , another LBW victim , this time from the bowling of Jack Harrison who quickly had Jamie Arrowsmith caught by Kieren Watson for nine which brought the total to a pityful 16 for 5.Jason Whiteley was next to go , caught by wicket keeper Matty Fowler off Sara Sundaram then Danny Taylrand Arron Curry added a little respectibility with a stand of sixteen before the latter was caught by Kieren Lindley for seven , earning Sundaram her second wicket of the evening. Taylor had reached sixteen and moved the total up to 49 when he was bowled by Forrester and the innings was soon brought to a close as Graeme Fletcher was run out and Jonathan Wroot was bowled by Guy Harley who had earlier contributed 14 with the bat for Frod.
So once again Luddington's batting let them down and they will be looking to do much better when they travel to Normanby Park next week whilst Frod will also be on the road when they head to Hibaldstow in week seven of the ten week season.

GRIMSBY TOWN KNOCKOUT SECOND SEMI-FINAL

BY ANN BOULTON

Fenner, last year’s beaten finalists in the Grimsby Town Knock Out, will be aiming to go one better when they begin their 2012 campaign
The final game in the first round of the competition sees the Hull side take on Caistor next Monday night for a place in the second semi-final.
Caistor captain Liam Wood has recruited up-and-coming youngster Dan Freeman, formerly with Horncastle and now training with the Nottinghamshire CCC Academy.  Freeman is also on the Lincolnshire radar, making his debut last month.
Also in the Caistor side is their former player Nick Dobbs (now with Broughton), who is behind the stumps, and Sri Lankan all-rounder Sahan Wijerathne.
Facing them will be the familiar faces of brothers Dominic and Will Rhodes who started their careers with Fenner.  Will is now with the Yorkshire Academy while Dom plays in the Yorkshire League.
The winner of this match will face Lincolnshire Cavaliers who went through with a one-run victory last weekend.  Grimsby play Louth in the first semi-final on July 2.
Fenner v Caistor begins at 6.15pm.  Admission is free for Grimsby Town CC members and £2 for non-members.  Cars can be parked around the ground.

CHAIRMAN BOB ENJOYS WATCHING A BIT OF 'VINTAGE BROCK'

BY BOB WELTON, CHAIRMAN - LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET LEAGUE

Another Saturday dawned and what miserable weather greeted me as I opened my front door. What games were on / off? Quick telephone call to "Scoop" soon made my mind up - games off all over the place; my adventure was not going to take me very far, and after a visit to the supermarket I set off for Rase Park to watch the George Marshall tie with Alkborough. The weather had improved somewhat and the Rasen groundstaff had put in some sterling work in order to get the ground fit for play.
Alkborough won the toss and decided to take first knock, a brave move by skipper Steve Clay, but one that was to be vindicated as the visitors totalled  167 for 7 wickets,  most of the Alkborough batters getting "a start" but not putting a massive total on the scoreboard, Nigel Brown and Craig Ross being joint top scorers with 38 each.
The home crowd were treated to some vintage Lee Brocklebank batting but his innings was soon over for 26 having been fortunate to have had a "life" whilst in the low teens.
The tea interval was entertaining as Alan Carter took pity on me and delivered a warming cup of tea. Alan and I chatted about days long gone by and the bad weather that was ruining the season as the Heavens opened up. Fortunately the covers were put on quickly and Johno Stevenson was on hand to use the super sopper to get the game re-started.
Market Rasen started reasonably well chasing the target but soon lost Ian Williams; however, Graeme Bell and Liam Scales pushed on till the former attempted an impossible run and was run-Out by the proverbial 22 yards. Matt Rutherford tried to keep the momentum up but when dismissed for 16 the innings fizzled out for 115.
The highlights in the Alkborough attack were provided by the slow bowling duo of Steve Clay and Lee Brocklebank as their combined 18 miserly overs yielded only 37 runs but brought the fall of 3 Rasen batsmen. Craig Ross and Steve Kempshall polished off the tail in 6.3 overs with Ross taking 3 for 22 and Kempshall 2 for 3, a competitive Rasen side finishing on 115 all out and the cup on the back-burner till next year.
Crutches were dispensed with on Wednesday and walking became much easier. I paid a visit to that well-known player, Jeremy Evans, which brought some hilarity into my working day. I don't think Jeremy had posed for the wall plaque at his front door as it was actually playing an attacking shot! his wife Nichola makes a great coffee, though.
Who knows where I'll end up watching a game or games this weekend as I continue my quest to visit all grounds during the season. Watch Out it could be yours!

BEST PART OF 50 YEARS BETWEEN CAISTOR'S ERN AND YOUNG TEAM-MATES

Fifty years between them playing for Caistor 3rds in Lincolnshire League Division 4 – left Olly Barrick and right Ernie Allison who marks 50 years with Caistor Cricket Club this season. They are pictured with Dave Gowshall Club Chairman (centre).

PICTURE AND REPORT COURTESY OF PETER THOMPSON
Peter Thompson Rural News, Caistor  pthompson@ruralnews.orangehome.co.uk

Caistor Cricket Club is much respected in local cricket circles for producing a string of young players. But some of the old’ uns keep going too meaning that there can be quite an age gap in their Saturday teams.
rnie Allison, captaining Caistor 3rds at the age of 64 this season, is also marking 50 years spent  with one club. Olly Barrick (14) is just starting out in the game and there are 50 years between the when they take the field.
Ernie recalls that his first match was in 1962 in a friendly – but cannot recall who the opposition were that day. One highlight though has not been forgotten in the passing years:
“In 1997 the 1st team won the Lincolnshire Premier League, that was a big one looking back  over the years. I still enjoy playing. I used to keep wicket, now I bowl a few overs.”
Olly had some positive words for his captain – fifty years his senior. The left arm spinner with a useful Chinamen said: “I started with Caistor when I was ten years old. I learn a lot from Ernie as captain about how he sets the field.”
Club Chairman David Gowshall said: “Ernie has made an enormous contribution to Caistor Cricket Club. It’s not been just on the field of play. He has done so much as our groundsman and on the committee as well.”

BRACEBRIDGE v HAXEY IS PICK OF LINCS ECB GAMES TOMORROW

BY ANN BOULTON

For the second Saturday running, Haxey are involved in the pick of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League matches.
Having beaten Woodhall Spa last week to go second in the table, Haxey now have to overcome the challenge of third placed Bracebridge Heath tomorrow to retain their position.
Current champions Bracebridge, who are again without skipper Paul Cook through injury, trail their opponents by just one point and are only 11 behind leaders Skegness.
The top team are away at Market Deeping whose batting has let them down in their last two games and the seventh placed side are likely find the going tough against a strong Skegness line-up.
The performances of the top three could also affect Woodhall who have slipped to fourth and need to beat Hartsholme to stay in contention for the top spot.
The Lincoln side moved out of the bottom two last weekend following their first victory of the season but are only one point ahead of Lindum who take on ninth placed Louth at St Giles Avenue.
Along with Market Deeping, Louth have suffered most from the bad weather, losing five games but have two wins under their belt to their opponents’ one.
With the gap widening between bottom place and the teams above them, Boston will be aiming to achieve their first win of 2012 when they entertain Grimsby at the Mayflower Ground.  Despite a run of poor batting performances, Grimsby are in sixth place and go to Boston seeking a big score.
Bourne are in fifth, just 10 ahead of Grimsby and make the short journey to Sleaford for what could be a close match.  Sleaford are only nine points away from a place in the top half of the table and this week welcome a new signing in ex-North Staffordshire League player Garry Park.

SATURDAY, JUNE 30 FIXTURES

CAVALIERS SEE OFF MESSINGHAM BY SINGLE RUN IN GRIMSBY TOWN KNOCKOUT

The victorious Lincolnshire Cavaliers team (back row, left to right): Jon Miller (Lindum), Will Bradford (Market Rasen), Simon Webb, Matthew Webb, Steve Crossley, Tom Webb; front (from the left): Ian Williams (M Rasen), Graeme Bell (M Rasen), Jack Luffman (Woodhall Spa), Dale Christie (M Rasen), Geoff Middleton (Lindum).

PICTURES AND REPORT BY ANN BOULTON

Just one run separated the two teams at the end of the most exciting Grimsby Town Knock Out match of the 2012 tournament so far. And at the end of the match, it was Lincolnshire Cavaliers who had that one run advantage, giving them victory over Messingham in a game that had everything the large crowd could wish for.
Cavaliers – an XI put together by former Grimsby player Geoff Middleton – brought a return to Augusta Street for a number of familiar faces.  Brothers Simon, Matthew and Tom Webb travelled from Yorkshire to take part as did wicketkeeper Steve Crossley, now with York and Jonathan Miller returned to his old club from Lincoln.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Cavaliers opened with Woodhall Spa captain Jack Luffman and Graeme Bell of Market Rasen who failed to survive Messingham skipper Andy Langford’s first over, getting caught with only four on the board.
But Luffman and Simon Webb got the scoreboard moving, adding 23 before Langford struck again to dismiss Luffman.
This brought Crossley out to join Webb and these two went on the rampage, putting on 56 off less than five overs and when Webb was bowled by Adam McDermott for 33, Cavaliers were 83 for three.  Crossley went on to make 51 off 32 balls with three sixes and two fours before falling to a catch off Paul Taylor.
Big hitters Ian Williams and Dale Christie kept the runs flowing and with two balls of the innings left, Tom Webb came out to hit a six off his first delivery then lost his wicket to Taylor who finished with three for 32 off his four overs.
This took Cavaliers to 142 for seven but right from the start Messingham were ahead of the run rate despite losing Shaun Bridges in the first over to Matthew Webb.
Jason New and James Barker – like McDermott, guesting from Barton – put on 53, with New playing an anchoring role as Barker hit 33 off 34 balls, including a six and two fours.
Barker was bowled by Miller who also took the next wicket but Lee Brocklebank continued the onslaught with 37 off 25 balls in which he hit two sixes and three fours before being bowled by Webb.
At the start of the 14th over, Messingham needed 27 to win off 24 balls with New still at the crease.  Economical bowling from Tom Webb made this 21 going into the penultimate over in which New was run out for 26, having batted right through but faced only 33 balls.
Going into the final over, the target was 13 off eight balls.  This was bowled by Tom Webb and produced a wicket off the third ball and a run out.  Williams then took a superb catch in front of the pavilion and with three balls remaining, Messingham still needed 11.
Danny Rands managed only two off the next ball - but there was still drama to come as Rands launched a six off the penultimate delivery to leave three needed off the final ball.
But Webb held his nerve and the batsmen could only run one, giving Cavaliers the slenderest of victories.
Crossley’s innings earned him the Man of the Match award.
Cavaliers now go forward to play the winners of next Next Monday night's game between Fenner and Caistor is the second semi-final.

Man of the Match Steve Crossley receives his trophy from Ron Borseberry of Grimsby Town
Re-united at their former club – (left to right) brothers Simon, Tom and Matthew Webb.  Simon and Tom now play with Baildon in the Bradford League and Tom is with Kirkstall in the Airedale & Wharfedale League.

OUTCASTS BOOK PLACE IN EVENING LEAGUE FINAL

Carlton Towers will meet Isle of Axholme side Outcasts in the final of the Arthur Brant Trophy (organised by the Snaith Evening League) on July 16th, following victories on Monday over Howden Town and Airmyn respectively.
Howden were bowled out for 74 with Rhodes hitting 24, Fenton taking an impressive 5 for 10 from his four overs and Brown 3 for 26. Then Mark Holmes guided Carlton to 75 without loss as he scored 50 not out.
In the other Semi Final, Airmyn were bowled out for 69 by a youthful Outcasts side, for whom spin was the order of the day as Josh Bramhill took 4 for 4 and skipper Scott Buttrick 3 for 4. Scott played his part to the full by hitting 14 not out, along with Mark Fletcher who also scored 14, as the Priorymen reached their target with two overs to spare. A venue for the Final has yet to be announced.

SKEGNESS LEAD HAXEY AT TOP OF LINCS ECB PREMIER

READERS LINCOLNSHIRE ECB PREMIER LEAGUE

Brett Houston scored the only century of the day in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League as Bracebridge Heath recorded the highest team total and moved back into third place in the table, WRITES ANN BOULTON.
Haxey and the current league champions both leapfrogged over Woodhall Spa, Haxey going second after bowling Woodhall out for 136 and going on to win by six wickets to stay ahead of Bracebridge by one point.
Houston’s unbeaten 104 took him over the 300 run mark for the season and his side to 241 for five and five wickets for Matt Bradley then helped bowl Louth out for 84.
But Skegness marched on at the top, keeping the gap to 10 points after Peter Houghton had hit another 88 runs against Sleaford to become the second player to top 300.
Alex Sears took five wickets as the seasiders were all out for 197 but Oliver Pringle then took five and Oliver Burford hit 52 as Sleaford were all out for 143.
Hartsholme recorded their first victory of the season at home to Market Deeping.  New signing Liam Moir-Holland hit an unbeaten 47 as Hartsholme reached maximum batting points with 229 for seven before Jake Benson and Henry Rush each took four wickets to bowl the visitors out for 137, of which John McDougall made 61.
This moved Hartsholme out of the bottom two as Lindum were pushed down to 11th place following the tightest game of the day at Augusta Street where the Lincoln side were bowled out for 156.
In reply, Harry Warwick hit 52 and Grimsby looked to be closing in on victory with 20 needed off the last six overs and four wickets in hand.   However, Luke Robinson’s three wickets in eight balls put his side back in the game and with nine down at the start of the final over, the home side were fighting for survival.
Matthew Cocks was left facing the final ball of the match with four still needed for victory but experience won the day as Cocks launched a six over long off to give his side a welcome 20 points that moved them up to sixth behind Bourne who added to Boston’s woes at the bottom of the table.
The Mayflower team were again bowled out cheaply, scoring 118 at Abbey Lawn, where Jack Berry’s 52 helped Bourne to a five wicket win.

12.53pm Saturday: Only three Lincolnshire League cup-ties have so far been notified to us as cancelled - these being at Holton-le-Clay, Outcasts and Barton. Clubs do, of course, have until 10pm tonight to inform the league of ties called off in the George Marshall Trophy and the Bob Welton Cup, so this is unlikely to be the full picture.
However, things are looking much better than expected, in view of the heavy showers encountered across the north of the county yesterday.

OUTCASTS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEMI-FINAL

BY GLEN SANDS

The dreadfully wet weather returned to completely wipe out the entire fixture schedule once again in the Snaith & District League on June 21st with just one team gaining more than the one point awarded for a draw as Thorne Colliery were awarded a victory when Goole Firemen conceded the day before.
In Diviison One all the other scheduled games at Askern ( v Fishlake ) , Goole Town ( v Hirst Courtney )  , Pollington ( v Burn ) and Sykehouse ( v Hensall ) were all called off.
In Division Two, Carlton Towers ( v Eggborough ) , Howden Town ( v Airmyn ) and Outcasts ( v Drax Village ) were non-starters.
If the weather relents by Monday June 25th Goole Town and Hirst Courtney will look to play their outstanding Snaith League Shield 1st Round match with Fishlake awaiting the eventual winners, whilst in the Semis Askern Welfare will host Sykehouse for a place in the Final.
The two Arthur Rant Semi Finals are between Airmyn and Outcasts plus Carlton Towers and Howden Town and they, too, are scheduled for June 25th
Attention will then turn back to league matters on June 28th with the fixtures as follows:
DIVISION ONE
Burn  v  Sykehouse
Fishlake  v  Goole Town
Hensall  v  Pollington
Hirst Courtney  v  Askern Welfare

DIVISION TWO
Airmyn  v  Outcasts
Carlton Towers  v  Thorne Colliery
Drax Village  v  Howden Town
Goole Firemen  v  Eggborough
