BUZZ RETIRES AFTER VERY LONG INNINGS

By Glen Sands

Luddington's home game against Upton cum Kexby saw the Isle sides stalwart Barry O'Brien (pictured) bring his cricketing career to an end and with typical dramatic license he went out with a bang when he hit the winning run before retiring from the game he has graced for so long.
Upton cum Kexby won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that had ha an aweful lot of rain over the previous couple of days and they quickly found themselves one down when Tom Wray was superbly caught one handed by Andy Lawson off the bowling of that man O'Brien for just three. Fellow opener Shaun Metcalfe and Hayden Green then took the Kexby total to 42 in quick time before Metcalfe was caught behind by a juggling Steve Proctor off Graham Clark for 13. Green was next to go , bowled by Clark for a confident 23 with the total at 49 and suddenly the momentum of the game changed as runs were at a premium. Mark Green was trapped LBW by he impressive Clark then brother Joe and Will Birkett followed , the former bowled by the evr increasingly difficult to play Clark and Will edging to wicket keeper Proctor off Jamie Arrowsmith for three. John Mattiolli had stuck around for some time and had made twelve when he was bowled by Arron Curry who by then had really tightened things up with his brand of spinners and it was he who went on to pick up the rest of the Kexby wickets as the visitors slipped to 79 all out , Curry finishing with 3 for 15 and Graham Clark 4 for 21 for the Isle side.
It was Clark who opened the innings for Ludd with Martin Fletcher and they had put on 17 before Fletcher was out gloving a catch to wicket keeper Hayden Green off Will Birkett then skipper Gareth Parkin was caught by Toby Roerts off the bowling of John Mattiolli leaving Ludd on 20 for 2. Andy Lawson joined Clark in the middle and in his own inimitible style he raced to 15 before he was caught behind by Green off Mattiolli and when Danny Taylor was bwed by the in form Mattiolli without troubling the scorers Ludd were wobbling at 43 for 4. Jamie Arrowsmith and Clark then took the total to 60 before Tom Wray struck when he trapped Clark LBW for 25 and Arrowsmith was soon to follow when he was bowled by Ben Alsop for nine with the total on 66 , still fourteen runs short of their target. Oliver Saxon and Steve Proctor were determined to see their team home and it looked like they had as they drew level with Kexby's score but there was one last twist of fate when Saxon was caught by Mattiolli off Toby Rberts for six which set the scene for Buzz O'Brien to take to the crease for one las time. He strode out with just one pad on having earlier taken them off when the scores were levelled , and proceeded to guide his first delivery through backward point to clinch the win for Ludd and leave the field to a chorus of whoops and applauds from both teams.
So the 2011 season has drawn to a close with Luddington finishing in third spot whilst individually Graham Clark has had an excellent season with the ball putting him in contention for the league bowling award, but the day belonged to Barry O'Brien who joined the club in 2000 and barely missed a game from that moment on. His highlight had to be the time he took all nine wickets to fall in a game that saw the opposition with only ten men therefore prevetng him from taking all ten whilst he also figured in a match winning fifty plus partnership with Steve Proctor and he also recalls taking two stunning match winning catches of which he is so proud. He intends to continue to travel to the Luddington games with his wife Mandy and his trusty dg Eddie but from here on in it will be to watch fom the other side of the boundary rope. The Luddington lads wish to offer him their best wishes now that he has finally stood down and look forward to seeing him and his family for many years to come.
Thanks Buzza, it's been a blast!!!

CLEETHORPES' TWENTY20 THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday sees Cleethorpes Cricket Club hold its annual Twenty20 cup competition. Now in it’s seventh year, the competition has become an integral part of the local cricket calendar and will feature the hosts up against North Bank rivals Hull and both Sheffield Yorkshire league representatives Collegiate and United. Last year saw the mighty West Indian Cavaliers triumph over Sheffield Collegiate in the final but the Nottingham based side that featured Usman Afzaal and Alex Tudor are unable to defend their trophy due to National Knockout Cup commitments. The day kicks off early with Cleethorpes facing Hull in the first Semi-final at 10.30. The second Semi-final sees both Sheffield sides clashing for a place in the final which will begin at approximately 16.30. James Osmond will once again lead Cleethorpes who have had an superb season and currently lie third in the Yorkshire league with just two games to go. Sheffield United have an excellent record in the competition having won the event three times in the past, the last occasion being 2008.
All three matches will be played with pink balls which proved very successful when they were trialled for the Yorkshire League Twenty20 tournament ealier in the season with fielding restictions and powerplay’s .
Cleethorpes Cricket Club are once again most grateful to Chris Broadburn of E.A Broadburn (Chemists) Ltd who continues his generous sponsorship for the seventh year running.
The Cleethorpes Chronicle will once again provide stump sponsorship for a bird's eye view.
Last year’s event drew a bumper crowd that saw some breath-taking cricket so come early as refreshments are available in the pavilion and around the ground.

BORDER LEADERS BEAT RIVALS

SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE & BORDER LEAGUE
From Ann Boulton

August 27
South Lincs & Border League leaders Billingborough scored a six wicket victory over third placed Belton Park while second placed Stamford Town recorded a similar victory over Boston 3rd.
This opened up a gap between the top two and the rest of the division, with Billingborough – for whom Geordie Scott took seven wickets - now firm favourites for the title.
But at the bottom of the table, Bourne 2nd closed the gap on Boston 2nd to two points and both are still within touching distance of Market Deeping 2nd.
In Division Two, Cavaliers lost their chance to move closer to leaders Skegness when they went down to Stamford 2nd who are now only seven points adrift of second place with two games in hand but whose place could still be threatened by Welby who scored a tight 10 run win over Spalding 2nd.
Blankney won the battle of the Division Three challengers but Baston gained sufficient points to move into second place, on equal points with Spalding 2nd with Blankney nine points behind but with a game in hand.
And Timberland’s hopes of victory at North Luffenham were dashed when rain stopped play with the visitors needing 16 runs for victory.

TOP MATCH FOR ALFORD'S ANDREW

On Saturday 20 August, Andrew White, captain of Alford & District CC First X1, married Chelsea Wood at the picturesque church at Belleau in the Lincolnshire Wolds between Alford & Louth.
The club had approached the Lincolnshire League last autumn to request that their First X1 did not have a fixture in the Premier League as the bulk of the team were helping celebrate the big day.
The best man was Justin Triffitt, who Premier League clubs may remember as Alford's overseas player during the 2007 season. Justin comes from Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia, and struck up a long-lasting friendship with Andrew, with whom he opened the Alford batting during his season in the Lincolnshire League, and agreed to travel from Australia to perform his duties as best man.
During his recent two-week stay in England for the wedding, Justin did manage to turn out for Alford in the East Lindsey League fixture at Woodhall Spa, as well as organising a stag evening and attending the Scarborough Cricket Festival.
The wedding had very much a cricket theme to it. The bride walked down the aisle to 'Jerusalem' (played at the start of play in England Test matches) rather than the wedding march; reception tables were allocated as cricket grounds with the top table being Train Fen Holt, the home of ADCC, rather than Lord's; and there was the second round of an 'Australia versus England' boat race between the reception and evening function with James Smith (ADCC & England) taking a 2-0 series lead against Glyn James (South Croydon & Australia - Alford's current overseas player) in a very fast and close run contest!
The honeymoon has been delayed until early October when Andrew is taking Chelsea over to Australia for six months, where he will be joining Justin Triffit's club, Wangaratta, as their overseas player for the 2011/12 season.
Everyone at Alford & District CC wish Andrew & Chelsea all the best for both the extended honeymoon in Australia and their future life together.

In the picture: Justin Triffitt (Best Man - ADCC Overseas player 2007), Chay Wood (ADCC - bride's brother) Andrew, Chelsea, James Smith (ADCC East Lindsey X1 Captain) Tom White (Groom's brother - ADCC) Matthew White (Groom's brother).

MEGGIES CONSOLIDATE THIRD PLACE

This Bank Holiday weekend sees Cleethorpes 1st X1 complete their away programme in the Yorkshire league with trips to Harrogate this Saturday before the trek to Scarborough on Bank Holiday Monday. Cleethorpes 2nd face a crucial home encounter with Alkborough on Bank Holiday Monday (1pm start) while the 3rd X1 also have a top of the table clash with Caistor 2nds at Chichester Road this Saturday (1.30pm Start). Cleethorpes 4ths travel to Outcasts 2nds this Saturday. On Sunday the North Lindsey X1 face Appleby Frodingham at home (2pm) while the East Lindsey X1 attempt to reach the league cup final with a trip to Holton le Clay.

Cleethorpes 1st X1 completed a highly professional 126-run over Driffield at Chichester Road on Saturday. Off spinner Harry Clewett was Cleethorpes’ ace in the pack as he produced Yorkshire league best figures of 7/32 to skittle Driffield for 105.
James Osmond had earlier won the toss and after much deliberation opted to bat first on a dry wicket in sunny conditions. Charlie Tomlinson once again opened the batting with the prolific Bill Kirby and the pair were soon climbing into the Driffield attack as Tomlinson launched an assault from ball one. The pair raced the fifty inside ten overs with Tomlinson eager to drive anything pitched up with Kirby content to rotate the strike. Tomlinson raced the his personal fifty in just 46 balls and had smashed eight fours and an enormous six when he departed needlessly with the score on 87 in the 17th over. Kirby drove a ball straight at cover giving Tomlinson little chance of making his ground after being called through for a quick single. Rory Osmond joined Kirby but perished for just four looking apprehensive as Driffield spinners were starting to get turn and uneven bounce out of the wicket. Attempting to gain the upper hand Osmond was beaten in the flight coming down the wicket for Major to complete a routine stumping. Kirby once again passed fifty in 80 balls as the hundred was brought up in the 19th over but he departed when bowled by Brent having taken his score to 51. Alex Osmond was joined by Eddie Carlton as Driffield spinners started to gain control. Alex in particular was looking in watchful mode. Carlton (4) was trapped lbw sweeping while James Osmond was also bowled by Brent for 11. With the innings losing momentum Alex smashed two sixes to take the score past 200 before holing out to long on for 54 in a patient innings lasting 110 balls. Windeatt (7) blasted a massive six before falling attempting the same shot and it was left to Omesh Wijisiriwardana (14 not out) and Harry Clewett ( 4 not out) to shepherd Cleethorpes to their closing total of 231-7 in 55 overs.
John Zielinski and Andy Ellis opened the bowling for Cleethorpes but were getting little assistance as Driffield’s openers comfortably negotiated the opening overs. Driffield’s Sri Lankan Rodrigo was looking a dangerous touch having added 30 in 40 balls before first change bowler Alex Osmond was able to turn a delivery away from him and having him bowled with the score on 41. This led to a spectacular collapse as the introduction of Clewett was to pay immediate dividends. Osmond had removed Norman to a superb catch at slip from brother James before Clewett’s first delivery reared of a length and Drury could only glove to keeper Windeatt. Three balls late he trapped Broumpton in front to claim two wickets in his opening over. Four overs later he repeated the feat first having Kohler Cadmore taken at midwicket by Rory Osmond attemting a slog sweep then trapping Hardgrave plum in front as Driffield collapsed to 56-6. Major showed some lower order defiance hitting Clewett for successive fours before the bowler had his revenge as he bowled him through the gate with a sharp turning delivery. By now Cleethorpes spinners were in complete control with Clewett claiming his third lbw decision to remove Woodcock. When Alex Osmond claimed his third victim to send Halder back Driffield were 85-9 with 24 overs still to negotiate. At least Driffield Skipper Brent and number eleven Tennant took the score passed 100 with entertaining cameos before Brent played one shot too many to sky a return catch that Clewett gratefully accepted. This gave Clewett stunning figures of 7/32 in 8.5 overs for his best return in Yorkshire league cricket. Alex Osmond finished with fine figures of 3/22 in 13 overs in a match were 16 out of the 17 dismissals fell to spin with the other being a run out. With York and Rotherham taking maximum points on Saturday, Cleethorpes consolidate their third position in the league with four matches to play. This weekend they face their final away fixtures of the campaign with tough trips to Harrogate on Saturday and Scarborough on Bank Holiday Monday.

Cleethorpes 2nd X1 slipped to an eighth successive Lincs Premier league defeat despite two stand out performances as Scunthorpe last Saturday. Having posted an excellent 256-3 in their 50 overs some poor bowling meant they were unable to defend that total as Scunthorpe clinched a nail-biting encounter with just two balls remaining. Earlier Stuart Airey had marked his return to Cleethorpes with a superb hundred as he and Callum Robinson added a massive unbeaten 228 for the third wicket. This was just 14 runs shy of the league record as Robinson (114 not out) himself completed a maiden ton with eleven fours and two sixes. Airey hit twelve fours and a couple of maximums as the pair lead a recovery from 28-3 of which Ryan Harrison had added a positive 17. Cleethorpes’ attack were unable to build any pressure as Scunthorpe comfortably kept up the rate although of spinner Andy Severn bowled a marathon spell of 20 overs for 2/67 to at least keep Cleethorpes in the game. Skipper Paul Sunley (1/47 in ten) had only six runs to defend in the final over which Scunthorpe knocked off in four balls. Peter Thompson had picked up 2/43 in eight overs as the spectre of relegation still hangs over the team.

Cleethorpes 3rd X1 maintained their title challenge with an easy five wicket home win over Alkborough 2nds at Chichester Road on Sunday. Cleethorpes shot out Alkborough for just 87 in 27.4 overs with Stuart Harvey recording season best figures of 6/55 in 13.4 overs with great support from Rob Brice who ripped the middle order out with 4/29 in 13 overs. Cleethorpes made hard work of reaching such a small total losing five wickets before completing the twenty point win in the 23rd over. Ben Marris hit 40 with Dan Tolson hitting 15 before being run out.

In the most exciting game of the weekend Cleethorpes 4ths clinched a brilliant 1-wicket win at Hibaldstow on Saturday. Having bowled their opponents out for 160 in 41.5 overs, Cleethorpes had slumped to 52/7 in reply when Nathan Judah (65 not out) and youngster Kris Hall added 81 for the eighth wicket. Hall showing great maturity hit 31 with four boundaries. With 20 runs still required after losing the ninth wicket, another young debutant Vivek Babu helped Judah reach their target in the 48th over to complete an unlikely win. Judah hit ten boundaries in his 65 while Babu remained 0 not out having kept Hibaldstow at bay for some eight overs. Earlier Hall had also starred with the ball picking up his first senior five wicket haul with 5/28 in 7.5 overs with spinner David Mansfield taking 3/30 in 13 overs. Henry Tasker and Judah also added wickets enabling Cleethorpes to claim an extra three overs from Hibaldstow which would ultimately prove decisive when chasing their target.

DESPERATE TO AVOID BOTTOM TWO

By Ann Boulton

Jubilee Park hosts the most crucial game of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League weekend on Saturday when 10th placed Woodhall Spa take on Skegness who are just two points behind their opponents in the second relegation spot.
With little indication yet of which feeder league winners will seek, or be eligible for, promotion, both sides are desperate not to finish in the bottom two.
At the top of the table, Boston in third must fight off fourth placed Grimsby Town if they are to overtake Bourne and keep up their challenge for honours. Bourne also face a testing game at home to an ever-improving Hartsholme. So tight is the middle of the table that Hartsholme are ninth yet are only 18 points behind Grimsby.
Leaders Bracebridge Heath play on Market Deeping’s good batting pitch at Outgang Road which, if the weather is favourable, could produce runs galore, while bottom side Nettleham travel to Sleaford whose sixth place is threatened by both Deeping and Lindum.
The Lincoln side are away at Louth and with only four points separating the two sides, this promises to be a close game.

SATURDAY FIXTURES
12 noon start
Boston v Grimsby
Bourne v Hartsholme
Louth v Lindum
Market Deeping v Bracebridge Heath
Sleaford v Nettleham
Woodhall Spa v Skegness

RICHARD, 60 NOT OUT, RETIRES TO CYPRUS

Richard Boxall (left) receiving his signed bat from Adrian Smart.

From Phil Burrell

It was the end of an era on Sunday 21st August as Grainthorpe CC bade farewell to veteran batsman Richard Boxall.
Richard, who turned 60 in March, has retired with his wife to Cyprus.
He joined the club in the early 90s and went on to make 254 league appearances. During his playing career he amassed 4,626 runs, scored 43 half centuries with a high score of 90, and finished with a batting average of 20.65. He took over the wicket keeping gloves in 2000 and up to 2009 held on to 114 catches and executed 65 stumpings. The East Lindsey League record for the most dismissals in a season belong to Richard (28), also the most stumpings in season (18) and most stumpings in a match (5) all during 2005. Richard has been involved in 2 record partnerships for the club, putting on 134 runs for the 1st wicket with Adrian Smart against Grimoldby in 2003 and the 3rd wicket 129 with Conor Elvidge in his last ever match (Richard contributed 24).
In the last 2 seasons he also played regularly for Lincolnshire over 50s and over 60s. However
Richard will be most remembered for his off field activities, without which Grainthorpe CC would not exist today, during the mid 90’s Richard set up junior cricket at Grainthorpe and was also instrumental in the East Lindsey League starting running junior cricket leagues. Of the team which played in Richard’s last game only 2 were not coached by Richard (himself and veteran Adrian Smart).
Richard was a true gentleman on the field and knew how to conduct himself on the field of play. He will be sorely missed from the club and hopefully from local cricket in general, he did say he would return to visit next year so hopefully he will bring his whites with him. We all wish him well and long happy retirement.

LINCS ECB SCORES AND STANDINGS

By Ann Boulton

Victories for the top three in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League saw a gap open up over the chasing pack.
Second placed Bourne gained three points over leaders Bracebridge Heath after the top team failed to bowl Louth out, cutting the deficit to 29 with four games to go.
Bourne picked up 20 at Grimsby after a superb spell of bowling brought Fahad Masood five wickets to take his total to 61 – just six short of the league record. And Boston stay third after returning home from Skegness with 20 after Matt Ward hit 99 runs and Elliot Wilson took five of the seasiders’ wickets.
But the top team had to be content with 17 despite declaring on 282 for three – of which Vikram Atri hit 105 - and giving themselves 54 overs to dismiss their opponents who hung on to their last two wickets to deny their hosts the maximum.
At Hartsholme, 530 runs were scored for the loss of only six wickets as Warren Nel notched up an unbeaten 169 to help his side to 263 for two - only to see three Market Deeping players hit half centuries as the visitors reached their target with just four wickets down and an over to spare.
Boston’s victory consigned Skegness to 11th place, two behind Woodhall Spa who also had three players making over 50 in the day’s highest total of 321 for eight at Nettleham. The home side, still without a victory, were then bowled out for 152.
The mid-table battle between Sleaford and Lindum ended in a draw with Sleaford taking 16 points to Lindum’s 11 to go three points up above their hosts in the table. Up and coming junior Will Wright hit his second half century for the Lincoln side while Alex Hornsby made 77 and Stephen Bradford took five wickets for Sleaford.
Grimsby stay fourth despite their defeat but are now 32 points behind Bourne and five above Louth – who are fifth but are only four up on eighth placed Market Deeping.

CRACKING FINAL GREAT ADVERT FOR LINCS LEAGUE

By Glen Sands

Outcasts 2nds held their nerve to lift the Bob Welton Cup at Alborough against a valiant Broughton 2nds side who fought every step of the way in what was a terrific if at times very tense Final.
Outcasts batted first and made a cautious start in the face of some tight bowling from Tom Brock and Shaun Clark. Charlie Mason eventually began to press the accelorator , hitting four boundaries in his score of 21 before he was firs to go , caught by Nick Crawford at mid on off Clark with the total on 30 which saw the in form Scott Buttrick join Anthony Fitzgerald in the middle. They took the total to 56 then Fitzgerald , who was just beginning to pick up the pace , was bowled by Jack Suiddall for 20. Buttrick was certainly considered a prized scalp by Broughton and they celebrated joyously when he was bowled by Siddall for just eight with the total on 65 , then youngster Josh Bramhill was run out by a direct throw at the stumps for three and the Isle side were reeling at 68 for 4. Skipper Ian Fletcher and his son Mark then steadied the ship , taking the score up to 93 despite the continued excellent bowling of Siddall , Clark , Brock and Andy Hillyard , then Ian was bowled by Jake Parker who kept up the tight bowling as Broughton picked up their fifth wicket. Brett Smith failed to trouble the scorers , bowled by Shaun Clark to make it 95 for 6 then Alex Fletcher joined his brother Mark to take the Outcasts total past the hundred as the overs began to dwindle away. Mark was eventually out for a valuable 18 , caught in the dep by Clark off the slow bowling of Joe Wiley and he picked up a second when trapping Alex LBW with the scoreon 111. Jonathan Wroot made a quickfire six then was the ninth man out , bowled by Wiley and it was left to wicket keeper Andy Colebrook ( 8 not out ) and Graeme Fletcher ( 2 not out ) to take Outcasts to a final total of 132 for 9 , a target that they were happy to reach in the end given the impressive bowling they were up against and the slow nature of the pitch. All of the Broughton bowlers played their part but Joe Wiley finished with the most wickets , 3 for 16 whilst Shaun Clark took 2 for 13 from nine overs and Jack Siddall 2 for 15 , also from nine.

If Outcasts were to lift the trophy they knew they needed to make early in roads into the Broughton top order and they could'nt have wished for a better start as they quickly reduced their opponents to 11 for 4 with some accurate deliveries. Skipper David Jones was first to go , trapped LBW by Jonathan Wroot without scoring then Graeme Fletcher took centre stage as he picked up three wikets in his third over ! He bowled Craig Hall before Hall had got off the mark then pinned the danger man Joe Wiley LBW having been hit for a boundary and he followed that by trapping Nick Crawford LBW with the very next delivery , leaving the Broughton innings in tatters at 11 for 4 and putting him on a hat trick ! Sadly for him it was'nt to be and much to their credit Broughton's Jake Parker and Oliver Reid really dug deep to battle back into contention with some dogged and determined batting. As the sun came out and the Broughton pair grew in confidence thegame swung back in favour of Broughton and at 86 for 4 there was little signs of what was to come but Ian Fletcher pulled off a master stroke when bringing 15 year old spinner Josh Bramhill and it was he who made the important break through when he had Red caught by Alex Fletcher for 36 and suddenly Outcasts were back in the hunt again. Shaun Clark came and went quickly , bowled by Bramhill with a beauty with the score on 94 then Alex Fletcher was brought back on by his dad and he proved to have nerves of steel as he produced a terrific spell that ultimately won his team the match. He bowled Jack Siddall for five when Broughton had reached 107 but Jake Parker was still at the crease and it appeared that he would see them home but young Alex was by now in full flow and he bowled man of the match Parker for 43 when the total stood at 111 with overs slipping away. Tom Brock hit a couple of boudaries to keep the match on a knife edge , then he attempted one hit too many and hoisted a catch to Brett Smith off master Alex and old head Ian Fletcher then brought the pacey Scott Buttrick on and he bowled number eleven Andy Hillyard when Broughton were still six short of the Outcasts total , sparking wild scenes from the Isle players who had looked out of it before fighting back in what was a topsy turvy innings.
So skipper Ian Fletcher lifted the Bob Welton Cup for the first time in eleven years , thanking Alkborough for the use of their excellent facilities , umpires Clff Girling and Pete Hill for their steadfast umpiring and Broughton for a tremendous game. It was a thriller with both teams giving their all in what was a great advert for Lincolnshire League cricket.

TOP BOWLERS ON SHOW

PREVIEW by Ann Boulton

The top two bowlers in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League go head to head on Saturday when second placed Bourne, for whom Fahad Masood has taken 56 wickets, travel to Grimsby who are fourth and will be hoping spinner George Linde can add to his 55 victims.
However, all eyes will also be on the foot of the table, where bottom side Nettleham are at home to 11th placed Woodhall Spa. Despite being well adrift on points, Nettleham will be going all out to register their first victory of the season while Woodhall will be making every effort to escape from the bottom two.
The middle of the table also promises to provide some interesting matches as sixth place Lindum entertain Sleaford who are just two points behind them. Both teams have played some very good cricket but fluctuating results have seen them fail to reach the heights they achieved in 2010.
Below them, Hartsholme and Market Deeping are on equal points, with Deeping in eighth by virtue of more wins, something Hartsholme will aim to change when the two meet at Ashby Avenue.
Leaders Bracebridge Heath take on fifth placed Louth at Cross O’Cliff Court and Paul Cook will be looking for maximum points from his side after two defeats and a draw allowed the chasing pack to close the gap.
Boston’s Paul Timby will be tossing up with a new captain when his team travel to Skegness where they will attempt to regain second place. Former skipper Wade McCall has taken over temporarily with the intention of reversing the fortunes of the seasiders who have slipped to 10th in the table, just 14 ahead of Woodhall.

OUTCASTS BACK ON TRACK

By Glen Sands

Outcasts got back to winning ways last on Saturday when they beat dogged Holton le Clay by 22 runs in Lincs League division one at a rather overcast Hirsts Priory.
It was the visitors who won the toss and invited Outcasts to bat first with runs being hard to come by from the start as Ian Hallam and Luke Ford kept things fairly tight. Richard Wroot had struck a couple of boudaries before he was first to go , bowled by Ford for 10 and opening partner David Hobson was next out, bowled by Hallam having made a laboured 13. Andy Lawson was caught behind by Josh Plaskitt off Hallam having made only four and at 52 for 3 the home side wer beeginning to struggle. Darren Clark and skipper Russell Fletcher then put together a decent parnership of 42 with some sensible batting , then James Rock bowled Fletcher ith a terrific delivery for 22 and Clark quickly followed , caught at mid wicket by Jack Barker off Rock again for 45 leaving Outcasts teetering on 99 for 5. It was at this stage that Andy Torr joined Gaham Clark in the middle and they went on to produce the partnership which ultimately won the game for their team. Torr was like a man possessed as he put the fielding side under great pressure with his running , although at times his batting partner was having to scurry too as the pair added an incredible 90 runs in the final ten overs , Torr ending the alloted overs on 48 not out from just 34 deliveries and Clark on 39 not out from 37 Torr hitting five fours and two sixes whilst Clark hit five fours and a huge six.
So from a vulnerable position of 99 for 5 Outcasts closed on 189 for 5 thanks to their two middle order heroes and they were able to go onto the field with great confidence that they could restrict Holton le Clay and pick up a win that would lift them back into the top four. Tom Sharpe and Jason Whiteley bowled well to the vsiting openers Dan Portus and Paul Holmes and it was Sharpe who struck first when he had Portus superbly caught in the deep by a diving Matthew Teal for 14 with the total on 20. Josh Plaskitt joined his skipper at the crease and helped move the total to 48 before he was second man out , bowled by Whiteley for 10. Despite being able to keep the scoreboard ticking over HLC were not keeping up with the run rate and were having to take ever more risky runs as Sharpe , Whiteley and then Liam McAnaney turned the screw along with some excellent fielding from the Isle side. Lewis Gash had reached 19 when he was superbly caught one haned by a diving Richard Wroot behind the stumps to give McAnaney his first wicket then came the big wicket of skipper Holmes who was caught sharply at gully by Andy Lawson off Whiteley for a well constructed 49. Jamie Farrow tried to break the shackles but he too perished when Tom Sharpe continued the high standard of catching to earn McAnaney a second victim then Danny Barker was stumped by the excellent Wroot off Whiteley for four as HLC fell further behind the required rate. The last chance for the visitors was extinquished when Ian Hallam was caught by Darren Clark off Whiteley for 25 and although they were'nt able to take all ten of the visitos wickets Outcasts restricted them to 167 for 8 at the end of their 45 overs , earning them a 22 runs victory and seventeen valuable points in their quest to climb back up the table. Jason Whiteley finished a mammoth spell of 22 overs with figures of 4 for 77 whilst Liam McAnaney took 3 for 60 from eleven which sets their team up for another tilt at runaway league leaders Scothern on Saturday in what promises to be a cracking game between two in form teams.

FOUR OFF LAST BALL WINS GAME

From Ann Boulton

The top three in South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One all came away with victories to leave positions unchanged.
Leaders Billingborough scored a convincing win over Grantham while second placed Stamford Town got the better of fourth placed Spalding but dropped a point on the leaders.
Third placed Belton Park were involved in the tightest game at home to bottom side Bourne 2nd for whom Tom Bentley hit his maiden century to help his side to 202 for four. Belton were then taken right to the wire with Andy Sheardown hitting the winning four off the last ball of the match.
However, Bourne picked up enough points to increase their chances of avoiding relegation and are now jjust nine behind Boston 2nd – who went down to Moulton Harrox – with a game in hand.
Skegness and Cavaliers continued their battle at the top of Division Two with Cavaliers picking up 20 points against Heckington while the leaders failed by just two runs to catch Thomas Cook’s score of 170 for 7, of which Vidit Matta hit division two’s only century.
Cavaliers are now 25 behind Skegness, both on equal games, while Stamford 2nd, who beat Billingborough 2nd, are seven behind Cavaliers with a game in hand. And Welby have pulled up to fourth, 10 behind Stamford.
It was all change in Division Three where North Luffenham slipped to fourth after going down by four wickets to Spalding 3rd for whom two batsmen – Stuart Parker and Kevin Nottingham – made maiden 50s.
This moved Spalding up to second, 16 behind leaders Moulton Harrox Sunday, but Baston, with two games in hand, are only 20 points adrift of the top team following an eight wicket victory over Claypole.
Blankney also kept up their challenge, winning a much higher scoring game against Timberland while Grantham 2nd successfully chased Pinchbeck’s 208 for six to win by three wickets.

SPORTSMASHIP TO THE FORE

From Ann Boulton
Re. the story re injury on Lincs Cricket Latest, we witnessed a small but sporting gesture today.
Bracebridge Heath were playing in the Area Finals of the Cockspur Cup (having gone through as Winkworth Cup winners) against Wickersley from the South Yorkshire League. Wickersley were batting, chasing 159 when wicketkeeper Jason Scheepers got hit in the face and went down. The batsmen ran one then realised he was hurt so walked back to their positions and declined the run.
This could have been crucial as the scores ended up tied but Wickersley won less wickets lost. Happily, Jason was OK to carry on.
Bracebridge then lost to New Farnley of the Central Yorkshire League so went out of the competition, leaving the other two teams to battle it out for a place in the Regional Finals at the end of the month.
The matches were played at Tickhill, near Bawtry, which is a very nice ground and the club put on a really good day with bacon butties and drinks on arrival, a BBQ later, proper commentary etc.

GAME ABANDONED DUE TO INJURY

Brigg Town Cricket Club's home game with East Park Marist had to be abandoned yesterday. Read the full story on Brigg People by following this link...

ALL CHANGE AT CAISTOR

Here’s the CHANGING face of Caistor Town Cricket Club.
An extension to the building means fresh accommodation for the players.
But the umpires have certainly not been overlooked.
No longer do they share accommodation with the empty beer barrels and the central heating boiler.
Indeed, things are not only spacious for "the umps" (in the revamped players' dressing rooms) but en suite and carpeted - with a vacuum cleaner on hand to help ensure everything remains spotless.
Veteran official Wes Allison was proud to show the new facilities to us.

The former dressing room for umpires.

BRACEBRIDGE RATTLE UP 288

By Ann Boulton

The chasing pack gained four points on Bracebridge Heath as the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League leaders picked up 16 points after hitting the day’s highest total but failing to bowl out Sleaford.
Bracebridge finished on 288 for seven at London Raod, Vikram Atri and Paul Cook making half centuries, while Sleaford hung on to make 175 for six, Will Brewster with 72.
Meanwhile, Bourne, Boston and Grimsby were all picking up 20 points with convincing victories over Market Deeping, Nettleham and Skegness respectively. Deeping put up a good defence of their meagre total of 110, taking seven Bourne wickets of which five fell to Tom Andrews.
George Linde claimed six for Grimsby and Jim Morgan hit 61 in the Augusta Street team’s seven wicket win over Skegness and Jonny Cheer and Josh Newton both made centuries as Boston scored 287 for five before bowling Nettleham out for 126.
Louth stay fifth after winning the mid-table battle at home to Hartsholme, chasing down their opponents 187 for eight to win by seven wickets, Stewart West hitting 78.
And at Jubilee Park, Woodhall Spa failed to take advantage of the Skegness defeat and move out of the bottom two despite Sam Evison’s unbeaten 132 – the day’s highest individual total - that helped his side to 244 for six, a total Lindum overtook for five wickets, Richard Bishop also scoring a century.
This win moved Lindum back up to sixth in the table, just two points ahead of Sleaford and four up on Market Deeping and Hartsholme while at the top, Bracebridge still command a 31 point lead over Bourne.

KELSEY WIN CLOSE ENCOUNTER

By Glen Sands

Outcasts' promotion hopes suffered a setback last week when they lost a close encounter against in form South Kelsey in a rain affected match at Nettleton Mines in Lincs League division one.
Russ Fletcher won the toss and invited Kelsey to bat first under cloudy skies and with the threat of rain never far away. Opening bats Dave Everatt and Chandi Wathakarage batted cautiously but both pounced on any loose deliveries before the latter mishit the ball high into the sky for stand in wicket keeper Darren Clark to pouch a catch to earn Jonathan Wroot a wicket , the Sri Lankan opener having made 21 from a total of 41 then fellow countryman Kumud Wijayatra joined Everatt at the crease. He had made eight runs when he was well caught in gully by Andy Torr off Jason Whiteley making it 58 for 2 and by that stage conditions were becoming ever more tricky for batting , coupled with some excellent containing deliveries from Whiteley and Liam McAnaney who was showing signs of finding some form. Lol Waghorn was third to go , caught and bowled by Whiteley for nine and just two deliveries later Whiteley had his third victim when Elliott Drinkall was well caught at deep mid on by Graham Clark. Opener Evereatt was still digging in and he had reached 48 when he was finally out , caught by McAnaney off Whiteley with the total on 102 and a further eight runs were added when Connor Hawkins was caught by Jonathan Wroot to earn McAnaney his first wicket of the innings. Matt Thompson was next to go , run out following a quite unauthadox but nevertheless impressive fielding by Andy Torr then the danger man Rob Baty was bowled by McAnaney as Outcasts went in search of the full bowling points. Youngster Ben Brown and Harris Charalambous did well to take the score to 134 before Brown was caught by Wroot off McAnaney for eleven and the innings closed on 138 all out when Tom Over was run out via a direct hit from skipper Fletcher , Whiteley finishing with 4 for 38 and McAnaney 3 for 45 for the Priorymen.
Conditions were no easier after the tea break for the batsmenas David Hobson and Andy Lawson opened for the Isle side. Lawson had made just a couple when he got a beauty from Matt Thompson that saw him caught at slip by Connor Hawkins then Mark Coulman joined Hobson to steady the ship. Both appeared well set only for Hobson o find himself trapped LBW by slow bowler Hawkins and it was the arrival of the slower brigade that signalled a change in fortunes for Outcasts as the runs became harder to come by. Andy Torr was next to go , another LBW victim this time to Chandi Wathakarage then two wckets fell with the total on 48 , Graham Clark being well stumped by Rob Baty off Hawkins for two and the big wicket of Coulman who was bowled by Chandi for 18. Within five further minutes the teams were sat in the pavilion due to another rain interuption but when Darren Clark and Russell Fletcher got back out into the middle they batted well to add 39 and put their team in with a shout despite the change to a " timed game " as over 30 minutes had been lost earlier. Opening bowler Elliott Drinkall was brought back into the attack and it proved to be a good decision as he picked up three important wickets for his team the first of which was hat of Fletcher whom he bowled for 16. One further run had been added , taking the score to 88 when Clark was trapped LBW by Drinkall for 17 and all seemed lost but that was not the case as bowling heroes Jason Whiteley and Liam McAnaney set about reaching the Kelsey score. Whiteley in particular was looking good but having taken the total to 105 he was bowled by Drinkall when atempting one extravagant shot too many and when Tom Sharpe was bowled by Lol Waghorn with the score on 110 it appeared to be a case of whether Kelsey could capture the one remaining wicket they required in the overs remaining. Having said that Jonathan Wroot bludgeoned some late runs to bring Outcasts back into contention but with just three overs to go and ten runs required the big man was caught in the deep by Chandi Wathakarage off Waghorn bringing an exciting game to a dramatic conclusion.
So Outcasts once again had problems when faced with slower bowlers and as a result of this loss find themselves slipping from third to sixth. South Kelsey on the other hand are in a very good run of form and they appar well set to mount a challenge for second spot in the table. Outcasts play hosts to Holton Le Clay on Saturday when they will hope to get back on travck whilst Kelsey meet Appleby Frodingham 2nds as they look to continue their promotion push.
In a quirk of fate Outasts 2nds entertained South Kelsey 2nds in Division Three and it was the Isle side that ran out the victors at Hirsts Priory. Scott Buttrick hit an exceptional 88 not out as Outcasts made 178 for 9 in their allotted overs , skipper Ian Fletcher making 31 to assist young Mr Buttrick then unsung hero Graeme Fletcher picked up 6 for 29 as Kelsey 2nds were bowled out for 65 , veteran wicket keeper Andy Colebrook producing a spectacular display of wicket keeping when standing up to the stumps despite Fletcher's rapid bowling !

GRIMSBY HOST SKEG

By Ann Boulton

Following last weekend’s second defeat in succession, Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League leaders Bracebridge Heath will be looking to get back to winning ways when they visit Sleaford, as will Boston who will aim to put last weekend’s heavy loss behind them and regain second place.
Boston are at home to Nettleham who were in a good position to claim their first victory of the season before being thwarted by the weather and the bottom side will want to build on this improved performance.
Sleaford are eighth but only six points off fourth place and will be keen to complete a hat trick of defeats for the top side.
Bourne, who took over in second, have a local derby at home to Market Deeping, now sixth and keen not to slip any further down the table.
Deeping are only four points behind fourth placed Grimsby where the visitors are Skegness, the seasiders in danger of slipping into the bottom two should Woodhall Spa continue the improvement that saw them beat the leaders last weekend.
Woodhall are currently 19 adrift of Skegness so need to pick up points to stay in touch with the teams above them but could find the going tough at home to a rejuvenated Lindum side.
Louth and Hartsholme, who meet at London Road in what could be the match of the day, stay locked in the middle of the table, just three points separating the two in fifth and seventh respectively.

Lindum CC (Lincoln) completed a remarkable double when Luke Robinson became the youngest player to score a century in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League.
In July, 14-year-old Will Wright became the youngest to hit a half century when he made 56 against Skegness.
Two weeks later, Robinson, who is 17, hit 117 off 104 balls with 11 fours and three sixes to set his own record and help his side to an unexpected victory over second placed Boston.
This brings Robinson’s total runs for the season to 374.

"WIJ" GRABS SIX OF BEST FOR CAISTOR

By Glen Sands

As the season moves into the final few weeks, all three Divisions in the North Lindsey League are beginning to shape up with one title already decided and the other two looking to be two horse races.
In Division One, Caistor Cougars and Grimsby Town are vying to take the title rom Cleethorpes 5ths and both won their respective games on Sunday. The Cougars bowled Messingham out for 141 thanks chiefly to Wijeratne's excellent bowling figures of 6 for 29 then skipper Gareth Johnson saw them safely home when hitting 32 in their total of 142 for 6 but Grimsby Town kept up the pressure on the Cougars and remain just three points behind with a game in hand following their victory over Appleby Frodingham who were dismissed for 133 , Jack Dixon top scoring with 72 as White took 6 for 29 then George Linde made 75 and Harry Warwick 43 not out as Grimsby eased to 135 for 2. The one other First Division game saw Scunthorpe Town beat Barton Acadamy Vikings by 80 runs , S Sarkar scoring 71 and Ian Snowden 52 for Town who made 174 for 8 before bowling the Vikings out for 94 although Reece Ogle offered some resistance as he made 52 not out. Caistor's game with Grimsby on August 28th may well have a baring on the destination of the title !
Outcasts were able to celebrate becoming the Second Division Champions following their victory over challengers Broughton who batted first at Hirsts Priory and made 136 all out , Joe Wiley top scoring with 66 whilst Liam McAnaney and Wes Ells took three wickets each then two familiar names from Outcasts past guided them to a six wicket win as George Torr ( 26 not out ) and Josh Bramhill ( 25 not out ) emulated the batting skills of their fathers Mick and Jonathan to ensure silverware for the Isle side. Elsewhere Alkborough beat Hibaldstow in a thriller to climb above Broughton into second place , Dave Kilgallon hitting an impreive 103 not out in Alkborough's total of 191 for 2 , Stef Wolkowski adding 42 then Hibaldstow replied with 184 for 9 thanks to 68 from Mark Nicholson and 44 from Tom Taylor.
Misterton could have clinched the Third Division had they beaten rivals Upton cum Kexby but they slipped up when losing by 18 runs leaving them needing one more victory to clinch the title. Upton batted first making 154 all out with Hayden Green hitting 53 whilst Callum Harrison 5 for 52 then Dan Pearce top scored for Misterton scoring 34 in their all out total of 136 , M Green taking 4 for 43 for the visitors. Elsewhere Luddington beat Bottesford to move up to third in the tablebut the game will best be remembered for the return to local cricket after several years off of Simon Milner who was so excited to be back on the scene that he went out to bat without wearing any pads ! Once he had them on he top scored for Bottesford with 40 in their 86 all out total , Matt Mellers taking 4 for 27 and Graham Clark 3 for 5 for Luddington who eased to 90 for 4 thanks to Darren Clark who finished the innings on 46 not out. Normanby Park were awarded the game against Everton who were unable to raise a team to travel to fulfill the fixture.

SO SIMPLE FOR SIMON TO GET BACK IN RUNS

By Glen Sands

There was a familiar face in the Bottesford ranks that turned up to play Luddington on Sunday in the guise of ex Scunthorpe Town secretary and wicket keeper Simon Milner who had taken an enforced sabatical from the game due to a family illness and he certainly grabbed the headlines on his return , even though it proved to be in a losing cause !
In this North Lindsey League encounter, Bottesford batted first on a wicket that had just been freshened up with a sharpe shower just before the start and quickly found themselves deep in the mire at 20 for 5 as Graham Clark and atty Mellers ripped through the top order. Dave Willey was first to go , caught at slip by Darren Clark off brother Graham without scoring then fellow opener Maj Khan was superbly caught by a diving Danny Taylor to give Mellers his first victim. Waj Khan was next to go , bowled by Clark for 10 who then repeated the feat by bowling Shah for eight which meant Milner could make his long awaited return to the game.
He strode to the middle adjusting his hat and gloves , asked the umpire for his guard ,then quickly had to make his way off again in order to put on his pads which he had neglected to don in his excitement to get to the crease !!
Once fully suited and booted he actually went well , making 40 runs as Bottesford rallied to 86 all out. Mellers went on to pick up 4 for 27 whilst Jamie Arrowsmith came on to pick up 2 for 18 and Barry O'Brien 1 for 17 but the best figures were certainly those of Graham Clark who bowled seven overs six maidens and took 3 for 5.
Luddington's reply got off to a bad start when Danny Taylor was caught by that man Milner of the bowling of Alan Watkins which brought the Clark brothers together who took the total to 40 before Graham was bowled by the wiley old fox John Danson who kept things tight throughout the innings. Stand in skipper Andy Lawson chopped a delivery onto his stumps having made just one run to give Danson his second wicket and when Oliver Saxon was trapped LBW by Waj Khan the total stood at 52 for 4 and Ludd were wobbling. However another old head , Steve Proctor joined Darren Clark at the crease and between them they guided Luddington to victory , Proctor making a well constructed 16 whilst " Dazzler " ended the game 46 not out.
So the season draws to a close for Ludd who have just two games remaining now , away against Normanby Park and home to Upton cum Kexby whilst Bottesford too have just two to go , against Broughton 4ths and Everton 3rds. For Ludd it's been a case of what might have been with some good performances and a couple of shockers and for Bottesford well they have done well to keep things going following several set backs , particularly at their Birch Park ground but they have come through smiling and will no doubt look forward to next season with optimism. As for Mr Milner , well he'll simply be happy to be back playng again , although he will certainly need to do a quick check of his equipment when next he goes out to bat !!

TOP 500 FOR SMART

Picture and report from Phil Burrell

Grainthorpe Cricket Club veteran Adrian Smart (above) achieved the tremendous milestone of 500 league wickets for the club on Sunday when the team defeated Louth. Adrian (52) has played for the club since it was formed in 1977, becoming founder members of the East Lindsey Cricket League a year later. During his 34 year playing career he has made 343 league appearances, amassed over 4,600 league runs, and taken 95 catches. In the last 2 seasons he has also made several appearances for Lincolnshire Over 50’s. Over the years many a young cricketer has learned a considerable amount from Adrian, not only about bowling and batting but also about the spirit of the game and how to conduct yourself on the field of play. Adrian continues to perform for the club at a very high standard.
All club members would like to congratulate Adrian on his achievements and hope he continues playing for many years to come.

Baston continue to threaten the top two in Division Three following their nine wicket win over Timberland while second placed North Luffenham also won by nine wickets against Claypole. PREMIER LEADERS BEATEN

By Ann Boulton

It was all change yet again in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League table as, despite the rain, only one game had to be abandoned.
Just six points now separate the fourth and eighth placed teams after what proved to be a good day for teams lower down the table with three of the bottom six winning.
Lowly Woodhall Spa belied their 11th place by beating leaders Bracebridge Heath while at Lindum, Luke Robinson hit an unbeaten 117 and Stuart Turner took seven wickets to help overcome second placed Boston. Lindum reached 239 for five before bowling their guests out for a meagre 63.
This allowed Bourne to move up to second after Peter Morgan had hit the day’s second century, making 110 not out at Skegness whose batsmen then succumbed to the bowling of Charlie Hopkins who took six wickets. Conrad Louth contributed 60 as Bourne made 234 for six before the seasiders were bowled out for 72.
After rain delays at Cross O’Cliff Court, Woodhall found some batting form to finish their overs on 182 for eight, Ashley Schultz taking five wickets. But the leaders were unable to match this as Woodhall’s bowlers, assisted by two run outs, restricted the final total to 160.
Tom Andrews took five wickets for Market Deeping but could not prevent Louth making the day’s top total of 242. Deeping then fell 45 runs short of their target despite David Gillett’s innings of 70.
And Hartsholme recovered from 11 for four to finish on 146 for nine – then managed to defend this total, thanks in part to Henry Rush who took five wickets for 28 runs to help bowl Sleaford out for 117.
Valiant efforts were made by both sides to complete the game at Mulsanne Park where Grimsby reached 215 before their final wicket fell, Richard Antcliffe and Harry Warwick making half centuries. But 30 overs into the second innings, with Nettleham well placed on 158 for three - of which Dan Wright hit 53 - the teams had to admit defeat and abandon the game.

Results
Bourne 234-6 (Morgan 110no, Louth 60), Skegness 72 (Hopkins 6-28);
Lindum 239-5 (Robinson 117no), Boston 63 (Turner 7-38);
