CHAMPAGNE MOMENT IS HOBSON'S CHOICE

By Glen Sands

Outcasts bounced back to pick up their first win in three outings when they beat Grimsby Town 2nds by 20 runs at Hirsts Priory , keeping them in touch with the top two sides in Lincs League Division One.
Skipper Mark Coulman had to withdraw at the eleventh hour when twisting his knee which saw Danny Taylor step into the breach but it was the captain's son that took centre stage when Outcasts were invited to bat first by Grimsby on winning the toss. David Hobson must have upset the cricketing Gods as he once again went early , this time to an excellent catch by Nigel Fanthorpe off the bowling of Brendan Volley for eight but Scott Buttrick , deservedly promoted from the second team , joined young master Coulman and together they took the total to 98 with some splendid batting. Buttrick had made 30 when he was caught by the giant Dan Wood to earn the wiley Richard Evans his first wicket of the game bringing Andy Lawson to the crease and he made an instant impact by smashing two huge sixes , one of which landed on the roof of the pavilion. Evans bowled him with a good delivery when he had reached 17 but Coulman was still going well and he brought up an impressive half century with a maximum of his own. He had reached 79 when he directed a high full toss straight back to Volley and when Matthew Teal was run out for eleven the Outcasts total had risen to 172 for 5. Three wickets fell on 180 as the Isle side pressed for 200 , , those of Tom Sharpe who was bowled by Dan Wood for three , Russell Fletcher who was caught by Chris Waters off Evans for 19 and Jason Whiteley who was bowled by Evans without opening his account. The overall svcore finished at 185 for 8 from the alloted overs , Richard Evans being the pick of the Grimsby bowlers with figures of 4 for 33 from fifteen overs.
Grimsby's reply saw opener Darren Burchall take the attack to Outcasts as he smashed sixteen in no time at all but he attempted one hit too many and was bowled by Tom Sharpe who then had skipper Dan Wood well caught by Matthew Teal for 17 leaving the visitors on 54 for 2. Nigel Fanthorpe had hit a ton against Outcasts in a Cup encounter in May but he was out cheaply this time around when adjudged to have edged a catch to Oliver Coulman off Liam McAnaney for just nine and suddenly the runs dried up with some outstanding bowling from McAnaney and Jason Whiteley. Brendan Volley hit out in an attempt to break the shackles but was caught in the deep by Tom Sharpe off Whiteley having reached ten then David Hobson produced the champagne moment of the match when he took a quite remarkable tumbling one handed catch to dismiss Richard Taylor for siteen when it seeme dfor all the world that the ball had gone way past him ! That earned Whiteley his second wicket and he went on to pick up two further victims , both to catches by fielder of the match Hobson , as Outcasts turned the screw . Chris Waters however was standing firm and he hit a deserved half century and was joined by Tom Lehman who ended the innings on seventeen not out to deny Outcasts a maximum twenty points , Whiteley ending the game with terrific figures of 4 for 18 from 14 very tight overs.
So the Priorymen gained seventeen points to maintain their position in the top four of the Division table. There were some excellent contributions from Oliver Coulman with the bat and both Jason Whiteley and Liam McAnaney with the ball whilst last minute stand in Danny Taylor is to be given special praise for his whole hearted attitude throughout the match both with the bat and in the field.
Next up for Outcasts is a home fixture with South Kelsey who have been making steady improvement as the season has progressed so it promises to be a keenly fought encounter.

UPTON AND KEXBY REVISITED

I paid only my second ever visit to Upton-Cum-Kexby Cricket Club on Sunday for the North Lindsey League division three game with Isleonians. It's a lovely setting with a nice bunch of people and excellent teas. The sun beat down and all was well with the cricketing world. You have to go through the villages and minor roads to get from my neck of the woods to this delighful village venue. Coming back I took in the leafy lanes of Willoughton and Blyborough and passed Kirton Lindsey's old ground on Redbourne Mere.
In the ranks of the Isle side - currently playing all their games away from home - were veteran Mike Newton, who played for many clubs in the Scunthorpe area; Mark Metcalfe, the former Haxey all-rounder; and Rick Green Jnr, who sweated blood for his team. Literally!

SHIELD FINAL ON MONDAY

By Glen Sands

The Snaith League Shield Final will be contested by Goole Town and Sykehouse on Monday July 4th, following Goole's exciting nine-run victory over Askern Welfare.
Goole made 129 for 6 when batting first, with 39 from Ashton Nottingham and 29 from Jake Mahoney, Askern's Morton taking 3 for 18.
Then Mantovani top scored with 20 as the Welfare replied with 120 for 9, Scott Thorpe taking 3 for 16 and Lee Hayward 2 for 11 to see the youngsters from Goole through
The venue for the final will be announced imminently.

CRACKING GAME AT GRIMSBY KNOCKOUT

By Ann Boulton

Just two runs separated the teams at the end an exciting final match in the first round of the Grimsby Town CC Knock Out. And it was hosts Grimsby who finally won through at the expense of Nettleham to claim a place in the semi-final against holders Messingham in two weeks time.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Grimsby got off to a flying start, putting on 40 off the first four overs for the loss of only one wicket – Neal Snell bowled by Will Carter with the score on 21.
Skipper Richard Antcliffe and Dan Wood added 50 before Wood went for 25 and Antcliffe and Harry Warwick put on another 45, the Grimsby captain doing the lion’s share of the scoring.
The fourth wicket fell in the 12th over with the total on 118 but the last four overs brought 51 runs thanks in part to Gary Tillison who smashed 27 off 14 balls before being run out.
Antcliffe was finally out for 87 which came off 61 balls with four sixes and six fours and Nettleham were left chasing 169 for six, Carter and Rob Cook each taking two wickets.
The Lincoln side got off to a slow start, Tillison taking a wicket in the first over and Snell scoring a direct hit to run out Cook and make it eight for two.
After four overs, Nettleham were well behind the run rate but Tom Dalton and Dan Wright set about the bowling and when Dalton was run out for 35, hit off 30 balls with a six and three fours, the score was on a par with Grimsby’s.
Wright went on to make 37 but the next two wickets went cheaply and Nettleham found themselves 127 for six.
However, this brought out Russ Binnington to join Carter and once again the board started ticking over. The introduction of Dan Wood to the attack brought the wicket of Binnington and when Carter was stumped off George Linde for 40 - which came off 23 balls with two sixes and three fours - and Jack Curtis was run out by a direct hit from Paul Taylor, it looked to be Grimsby’s game.
But Nettleham still weren’t finished as Alex Graham got together with Craig Cosgrove and some sensible batting saw the total inch up until, with five needed to win off the last ball, the batsmen could only run two to end the game on 167 for eight.
Antcliffe’s innings earned him the Man of the Match award, presented by Rob Smith whose company Solutions sponsored the game.
Cleethorpes will play Fenner in next week’s first semi-final and Grimsby take on Messingham the week after.

FIRST DEFEAT TAKES TOP BILLING!

By Ann Boulton

Billingborough suffered their first defeat of the season in South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One at the hands of Stamford, who moved up to fourth in the table.
Challengers Grantham and Moulton Harrox failed to take advantage of the leaders’ result, allowing Belton Park to move up to second after the slimmest of victories by over Moulton.
Only seven points now separate second and seventh in the table, with Grantham just two behind second place and two ahead of Moulton who were bowled out for 132 and claimed nine Belton Park wickets before the home side claimed victory.
Lindum Ramblers’ 14 year old batsman Will Wright took his runs total for the season past the 300 mark with an innings of 65 to help his side to a nine wicket win at Market Deeping.
And Spalding CC enjoyed a successful weekend with all three teams winning, the 2nd XI consolidating their second place in Division Two with victory over Heckington. Billingborough 2nd stay third, just seven points adrift with two games in hand while Cavaliers kept their place in the top half of the table after Dave Kennedy hit the day’s only century in the victory over Boston 3rd.
Adam Smith hit a maiden half-century and George Kyme took six wickets for Sleaford Sunday but could not prevent their side going down to Thomas Cook by 45 runs.
Spalding 3rd, meanwhile, were making sure they remained top of Division Three with a five wicket win in a low scoring game against Pinchbeck but North Luffenham continue to threaten following their ten wicket win over Timberland in which David Brew took six wickets.
Luffenham are 12 points behind Spalding with a game in hand – and the two meet next weekend at The Oval.

Isleonians made 117 all out at Upton cum Kexby thanks chiefly to Mark Metcalf who hit 39 , Will Burkitt taking 4 for 20 and Ben Alsop 4 for 28 then Dan Watt guided Upton home with an unbeaten 54 for the loss of just four wickets. Newcomers Normanby Park were able to celebrate their first victory of the season and it was a hefty one when they bowled an under-strength Bottesford out for 29 , Blockley taking 4 for 9 for Normanby who's openers Render (14)and Danning (13) saw them to 30 without loss.

KELSEY'S CUP RUN ENDS

By Mike Owen

South Kelsey entertained Shipston-on-Stour Cricket Club yesterday in an attempt to enter the last 16 of the competition, the final of which is at Lord's. Conditions where ideal at picturesque Lysaght's ground, Holton-le-Moor, with the temperature hovering around the 30 degrees mark.
Kelsey who had several first team players unavailable for various reasons won the toss and invited Shipston to bat. With an opening stand of 101 with M Corby 44 and J Morris 64 Kelsey bowlers toiled away. Marcus Meadows came out with best figures for Kelsey of 4 -33 (including 3 in one over.) Connor Hawkins achieving 2-22. After 40 overs Shipston total was 248-8.
Kelsey lost early wickets but the young side commendably battled away,Connor Hawkins top scoring with 51 and with good contributions from Phil Pearson, Andy Stockdale and Kumud. Kelsey's final score was 174 all out.
The game was played in excellent spirit and both teams enjoyed a post match BBQ and shared cricketing experiences before the visitors left on their coach for a three hour trek to the Cotswolds.
The game was well umpired by Steve Massingham and Tom Fox, both from Metheringham, near Lincoln.

Bad weather and an honest mistake dominated matters in the Snaith Evening League which saw the First Division title race hot up whilst in Division Three Howden maintained their unbeaten campaign.

DIVISION ONE
Leaders Askern Welfare were thwarted by rain which prevented their scheduled game with Luddington from taking place which meant that Goole Town were able to close the gap at the top to just one point as Drax Village conceded their fixture on the Wednesday evening , the Villagers currently experiencing difficulties in putting a team together. The one game that was played saw Fishlake beat Sykehouse by 19 runs , posting a total of 120 all out thanks to David Johnson who hit 44 , Jim Davies taking 3 for 23 and Stuart Bellwood 3 for 27 before Sykehouse were bowled out for 101 with Chris Marshall contributing 39.

They immediately rectified the situation when their skipper sportingly left the field but Pollington were bowled out for 98 and a decision on who actually gains the points will be taken by the league committee once an official review is requested by Pollington ! BIG CUP-TIE FOR KELSEY

Sunday sees South Kelsey Cricket Club hosting Shipston-on-Stour in the area final of the National Knockout.
Kelsey secretary Mike Owen is anticipating a good game at the former Nettleton Mines ground, Holton-le-Moor.
"They seem a very good side, having beat last year's semi-final team last Sunday by 88 runs in a high scoring game," he told Lincs Cricket Latest.
The visitors have requested a slightly later 1.30pm start to allow more time for their journey into the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Shipton are bringing a coachload of supporters, which will be good news for the nearby Hope Tavern!

INTERNATIONAL PLAYER RETURNS

By Ann Boulton

With second place in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League in their sights, Boston host Woodhall Spa tomorrow (Saturday). However, the Mayflower outfit could face a tough battle as Woodhall are anticipating the arrival of Pakistani international Fawad Alam in time for this match.
Alam played several games at Jubilee Park last season before it was discovered that he did not have the correct visa to play league cricket. No action was taken against player or club and this year, Woodhall have gone through all the necessary channels to sign the quick bowler as their overseas player, though his application suffered a number of delays before he was finally able to travel.
Boston are just three points behind second placed Grimsby while Woodhall are languishing in 11th place but will be hoping for a change of fortune with Alam to strengthen the attack.
Grimsby take on Sleaford at Augusta Street and on paper should beat the ninth placed team but Sleaford are showing definite signs of improvement and could prove tough opponents.
Leaders Bracebridge Heath, who have a 31 point lead over Grimsby, travel to Bourne but the match of the day should be at Skegness where the home side are sixth, just five points behind visitors Louth.
Only 14 points separate fifth and ninth and in this tight group are Lindum and Hartsholme who play at St Giles Avenue knowing that victory could mean a move into the top half of the table.
Bottom side Nettleham, the only team without a win, entertain fourth placed Market Deeping who have slipped down from second and will be keen to regain their place.

SATURDAY FIXTURES
(12.30 start)Boston v Woodhall Spa

CLEETHORPES KNOCKED OUT

By GRAHAM HACKNEY

Cleethorpes 1st X1’s run in the ECB National Knockout Cup came to an end with a brave 89-run defeat at a powerful Sandiacre on Sunday. With Saturday’s league game at home to Scarborough called off due to the weather, Cleethorpes travelled to West Nottingham in third place in the Yorkshire league to face the Derbyshire Premier league champions. However they were dealt a number of blows overnight with paceman Jack Harrison going down with glandular fever and Yaniv Judah still feeling the effects of a sore neck. This meant Skipper James Osmond was short of all three front line bowlers as Sandiacre opted to bat after winning the toss in cloudy conditions. Osmond and spinner Harry Clewett opened the attack and started well as Clewett claimed the early wicket of Chapman in the fourth over with just five runs on the board. Rory Osmond taking a comfortable catch at midwicket as the batsmen attempted to hit over the top. With the powerplay in operation for the first fifteen overs both Osmond and Clewett found good control offering little to the batsmen. Osmond’s first six overs went for just nine runs before being replaced by Fred Lumby. With Alex Osmond replacing Clewett both opener Trueman and Notts Academy batsmen Oliver Swann started to up the tempo. Swann looked in tremendous touch regularly driving Lumby through the covers as he and Trueman began to build a commanding total. With few bowling options at his disposal Osmond turned to Paul Sunley and Bill Kirby to plug the gaps. However with the batsmen well on top both could do little to stem the runs. Trueman eventually departed for a sold 86 made of 106 balls when Kirby trapped him on the back foot with the score on 167. He and Swann had added 162 in 30 overs. The chase for quick runs was now on. Alex Osmond ran Jordison out going for a suicidal second and returned to claim the first of three stumpings to keeper Gary Cowlam as Sandiacre’s lower order proceeded to give him the charge. Swann meanwhile was steadily increasing his strike rate and completed an accomplished century in the 42nd over. He would go on to remain 115 not out in just 116 balls with 15 boundaries. Sandiacre closed out their 45 overs on 264-7 to set Cleethorpes a mammoth target. Alex Osmond had been the most successful bowler with 3/37 in his nine overs while brother James finished with 1/40. Unfortunately Cleethorpes lack of firepower had cost them with Lumby, Sunley and Kirby going for 130 in their eighteen overs.
Cleethorpes’ reply began badly with Rory Osmond trapped in front to the ninth ball of the innings so James Osmond, returning after a broken finger, promoting himself to three. Things went front bad to worse for the Meggies when Bill Kirby(11), who had started confidently, was adjudged lbw when clearly getting an inside edge. When Osmond flashed hard at McFadyean and was taken behind for 7, Cleethorpes had slipped to 32-3 in only nine overs. Eddie Carlton and Alex Osmond led a recovery with Carlton especially looking in decent form. They saw off the threat of Sandiacre’s openers and were beginning to flourish when Osmond (7) looked mortified to be given out caught behind off the faintest of edges. Charlie Tomlinson (0) followed two balls later to one that kept low and when Callum Robinson (1) was bowled the next over Cleethorpes looked dead and buried at 63-6. Carlton was inching towards a deserved half century and added 38 for the seventh wicket with Paul Sunley as the pair took Cleethorpes past the hundred. Having reached 49 Carlton hitting seven boundaries when he departed as Chapman squeezed a ball through his defences. With little to lose Sunley and Gary Cowlam went on the offensive putting together a highly entertaining half century stand in only seven overs. Cowlam especially was in destructive form smashing two enormous sixes and three fours in his 35. Sunley edged behind for 36 having hit a six and three boundaries and when Cowlam was run out backing up by the boot of Trueman the game was just about up for Cleethorpes. Clewett (9)smashed one late six before being last man to depart holing out on the boundary to draw a close on Cleethorpes’ National Knockout adventure. Cleethorpes closed on 175 all out as Sandiacre progress to the regional final to face the mighty West Indian Cavaliers.

OUTCASTS BOW OUT TO CHERRY

By Glen Sands

Outcasts might have been forgiven for thinking they could pull off a " giant killing " at tea when they had bowled Premier Division Cherry Willingham out for 130 in the George Marshall Cup but they fell like a pack of cards to a dismal 65 all out to bow out of the competition with barely a whimper.
The visitors were given first knock on what was a greener than usual pitch and quickly lost their first wicket when Lee Coupland was bowled by Tom Sharpe for four with the total on just nine then fellow opener Matt O'Halloran was caught by wicket keeper Richard Wroot again off Sharpe for 12 making it 30 for 2. Moments later Wroot was forced to hand the gloves to Oliver Coulman having picked up a finger injury and for a while the home fielding became a little disjointed as Cherry took their score to 54. Matt Carter was then bowled by the impressive Liam McAnaney having made a dozen and with the overall total on 70 danger man Will Carter was caught by returning skipper Mark Coulman off McAnaney again for 28 and the Priorymen were looking to be in control. John Singleton was next to go , bowled by Sharpe for nine and Matthew Teal then picked up a deserved wicket when Graham Clark took an exceptional spiralling catch to send Andrew Johnson back to the pavilion for five leaving Cherry on 116 for 6. Joe Dobson had the misfortune to drag his first delivery from Teal onto his stumps and a cunningly disguised slower ball did for Danny Langford as Teal took his wickets tally to three. Liam McAnaney's direct hit from distance saw Graham Priestley run out as Outcasts looked to wrap things up and they did just that when Graham Clark bowled Scott Coupland for 28 leaving the final total at 130 all out , Tom Sharpe and Matthew Teal each taking three wickets whilst Liam McAnaney took two and Graham Clark one.
With Wroot nursing his injured finger Outcasts opened with Oliver Coulman and Darren Clark but both went within an over of each other in what was a dreadful start for the Isle side , Coulman dragging on a Will Carter delivery for two and Clark edging to wicket keeper Scott Coupland off Joe Dobson without opening his account. Mark Coulman was next to go , adjudged LBW to Carter having made 10 then Andy Lawson was caught by Matt O'Halloran off Carter for a quickfire 15 which left his team floundering on 28 for 4 and in trouble. Things did'nt improve when Russell Fletcher was bowled by an absolute jaffa by the excellent Carter then Matthew Teal was caught at slip by that man Carter off a well disguised slower ball from the ever dependable Dobson for five. Graham Clark and Richard Wroot did offer some resistence with a partnership of eighteen but all hope was gone when Clark played around a straight one from Carter and was trapped LBW for 16. Three runs had been added when Wroot was comfortably caught by John Singleton off Andrew Johnson for six and it was Johnson who went on to pick up a second wicket by way of another LBW , this time Jason Whiteley being caught infront of the stumps. The final wicket fell at 65 when Liam McAnaney was caught behind to give Danny Langford a wicket which brought a sorry display to a close and left Outcasts to " concentrate on the league " for yet another year.
There is no doubting that Outcasts are unlikely to face bowling of the quality shown by Will Carter and Joe Dobson every week but it does give the Isle side an idea what they might expect if they were able to finish in the top two of the First Division this year. Next up is a home match against Grimsby Town 2nds whilst Cherry Willingham can look forward to a Quarter Final fixture next month away to Messingham or Hartsholme 2nds.
It was a much better story for Outcasts 2nds who gained an impressive nine wicket win at Barton Town 2nds in the Quarter Finals of the Bob Welton Cup , bowling Barton out for 98 with four wickets for in form Alex Fletcher then knocking off the target for the loss of just one wicket , Scott Buttrick continuing his good batting form for the second eleven.

OUTCASTS 59 FOR EIGHT, FLETCH 58 NOT OUT

Outcasts’ stalwart all-rounder, Ian Fletcher, celebrated his 58th birthday on Father’s Day (Sunday) and here he is with nothing stronger than a tea-time cuppa to hand.
Clearly the renowned decorator wasn’t exactly painting the town red at this point!
He spent a happy afternoon playing cricket alongside other members of a family which continues to put so much into the Isle of Axholme village club, based at Hirst Priory.
Fletch Snr came over to Broughton to help son Russ’s Sunday team inch home in a surprisingly low-scoring North Lindsey League game (55 all out playing 59 for eight).
He made a few runs, held a decent catch but didn’t get called upon to turn his arm over.
On Saturdays, Fletch continues to skipper Outcasts 2nds in Lincolnshire League division three.
His view of Sunday’s division two match at Broughton was the same as my own: It was just like a typical club game 30 years ago – low scoring but full of interest.
There was nothing wrong with the strip at Broughton – far from it. Most of the batsmen had an off day and the bowlers were on top throughout, particularly Paul Musselwhite for Broughton and Scott Buttrick and Liam McAnaney for the visitors.
A magnificent tea – in terms of quality and quantity - was again provided by Broughton CC for the teams and umpires to savour.
With the game reduced to 30 overs a side (from 40) because of the weather, the chips were still being cooked when the Broughton innings concluded, meaning the teams had to return to the middle to bowl a few overs to fill in time to 4pm.
Believe me, it was well worth the wait!
“We’ll have to go back out until tea’s ready” used to be a phrase you heard often in local cricket years ago, but today it’s a rarity, with average team scores that much higher and average over-rates (sadly) very much lower than when 20 an hour was the norm.
This “Fletch Birthday Feature” is just the sort of story which would have found its way into the dear old In A Spin column in the Scunthorpe and Grimsby Telegraphs.
I really miss penning In A Spin each week and some people are still kind enough to say that they miss it.
Hopefully those who followed In A Spin over many years think Lincs Cricket Latest fits the bill left by its sad demise.
Online, of course, we have no space constraints, meaning more cricket news can be posted.

BIG BROCK'S MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

By Ann Boulton

A seven-wicket haul for Lee Brocklebank, believed to be a Grimsby Town Knock Out record, saw trophy holders Messingham through to the semi-finals of the competition at the expense of Caistor.
Brocklebank’s first over – the fifth of the innings - brought three wickets, all caught by Donovan Deeble, while his second produced a triple wicket maiden. And at the end of his four eight-ball overs, Brocklebank’s figures were seven for 21.
Earlier, Deeble – Messingham’s overseas player - had hit 55 off 27 balls with three sixes and seven fours to help his side to 192 for seven. The Australian put on 40 for the first wicket with Tom McDougall, 30 for the second with Andy Langford and 36 for the third with Jason Scheepers who contributed 39 while Jason New was unbeaten on 20 at the close.
Caistor got off to a much steadier start but had 37 on the board when Deeble took his first catch off Brocklebank. Five runs later, the same combination took two more wickets and with the score on 50 for three, Brocklebank began his second over which ended with Caistor on 50 for six.
Luke Robinson and Lewis Jefferson steadied the ship, taking the total to 84 before Robinson became Brocklebank’s seventh victim and the lower order all contributed but the final wicket fell in the last over on 118.
Deeble had earlier been favourite for the man of the match but his batting and fielding was eclipsed by Brocklebank’s performance and it was the bowler who collected the award from Terry Smith of sponsors Humberside SAAB.
Messingham will now play the winners of next week’s game between Grimsby Town and Nettleham in the second semi-final on July 10th.

BOWLER GRABS 9-10

From Ann Boulton

Boston bowler Paul Deans had his club running to the record books after recording an amazing nine wickets for just 10 runs in his side’s South Lincolnshire & Border League Division One match against Bourne 2nd.
Deans’ haul came off 9.5 overs, with four maidens and gave his side their first victory of the season as well as opening up the gap over their opponents at the bottom of the table.
Billingborough marched on at the top with a convincing victory over Belton Park but Grantham are still in hot pursuit after a five wicket win against Market Deeping. Third placed Moulton Harrox had their game washed out at Lindum Ramblers.
Division Two brought the most exciting game of the day which once again involved Cavaliers. Batting first at Spalding, the Peterborough side finished on 178 for nine, Alex Glover with 60 and Heath Ripley taking five wickets for the home side – who ended 177 for nine.
Leaders Skegness, who have yet to lose a game, beat Welby by three wickets while second placed Sleaford Sunday beat Ropsley. However, the following day, Sleaford lost the opportunity to close the gap on Skegness when they went down heavily to Spalding 2nd, for whom new signing Barry Stanway took eight wickets to push his team up from eighth to third in the table.
Steve Ryder hit his maiden century – and the only ton of the day - for Claypole in their Division Three victory over leaders Spalding 3rd, which allowed North Luffenham to close the gap with a win over Pinchbeck.

'EXPLOSION' NEAR CRICKET GROUND

Players and officials turning up for yesterday's George Marshall Trophy second round tie between Appleby-Frodingham 2nds and Alkborough at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, passed a group of fire engines and fire-fighters near the soon-to-open Pods leisure complex, which adjoins the cricket ground.
There was talk of an explosion having taken place.
Courtesy of the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Lincs Cricket Latest can now reveal more details.
Fire-fighters were called at 10:39am to what the service describes as an explosion in a chlorine treatment plant at the swimming baths.
The Fire Service says it administered oxygen to three people suffering from breathing difficulties, cuts and bruises. Two of the casualties were transported to hospital by ambulance.
North Lincolnshire Council is soon to open The Pods, and we saw senior councillor John Briggs (pictured) near the entry road on our way to park up at Brumby Hall.

HALF GAMES WASHED OUT

By Ann Boulton

Rain washed out half of the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League programme but benefited Grimsby and Boston whose games ended in victory, moving both sides up one place in the table.
Leaders Bracebridge Heath had completed only a handful of overs at Hartsholme when the game was abandoned and it was the same situation at second placed Market Deeping who hosted Lindum.
But at Woodhall Spa, Grimsby were recovering from 41 for three to make 202 before the final wicket fell, Harry Warwick hitting 62 and sharing a stand of 103 with John Maddock who was out on 49.
Woodhall also had a good third wicket stand as Nic Stone and Dan Milgate put on 61 and the home side looked set for a successful run chase but when David White joined the attack, wickets began to tumble. Stone hit 50 but White’s nine overs brought him four wickets and Woodhall ended 16 runs short on 186, Steve Crossley making five dismissals behind the stumps for Grimsby.
This moved Richard Antcliffe’s team up to second in the table while Boston went third above Deeping after picking up 17 points at Bourne.
Batting first, Boston ended 227 for eight, of which Matt Ward hit 80 and Bourne were then restricted to 123 for eight a the close. Boston are now three points behind Grimsby but just one ahead of Deeping.
Sleaford opened up the gap over the bottom two when, having been put in to bat by Skegness, they smashed 300 runs for the loss of only five wickets, Phil Sneath hitting 96 and Tom Shorthouse and Luke Hollingworth each making half centuries.
Skegness found runs harder to come by and at the close had made only 176 for six, Carl Wilson with 59.
No play was possible at Louth who were hosting btottom side Nettleham.

LINCS LEAGUE RAINED OFF CUP TIES

Given the state of the weather today and the poor forecast, clubs in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League are reminded of the requirements if play proves impossible in the second round of the George Marshall Trophy and the quarter-finals of the Bob Welton Cup.
Full details can be found in the 2011 League Handbook, page 92. But for the benefit of those without this worthy publication to hand, here's what League Rule 8b requires:
In the event of the original game being postponed it is expected that the following options will be taken in order
A) A re-arranged weekend game before the next cup round.
B) A re-arranged evening match of 20 overs a side before the next cup round, with no bowler bowling more than 4 overs.
C) A bowl-out.
D) Neutral umpires shall officiate at Bowl-Outs, if available.

CLUBS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONCEDE.

MIRACULOUS MEGGIES

Cleethorpes players celebrate victory against Harrogate.

PICTURES AND REPORT BY GRAHAM HACKNEY

Cleethorpes made a miraculous recovery to claw victory from the jaws of defeat to strengthen their challenge for the Yorkshire league on Saturday. After being bowled out for just 136 by an excellent Harrogate attack, Cleethorpes bounced back and backed up by a fine bowling and fielding performance knocked over their opponents to claim a confidence boosting 32-run win. With veteran Andy Ellis leading the side for the first time in Charlie Tomlinson’s absence, Cleethorpes were put in by Harrogate in what looked like seamer friendly conditions. Friday’s rain had left the wicket damp and openers Bill Kirby and Rory Osmond found conditions hard as they battled against the moving ball. Having added 11 in the eighth over Cleethorpes suffered a double blow. Kirby (3) attempting to leave a Ben Biker delivery only succeeded in diverting the ball onto his stumps. Worse was to follow next ball when a majestic leave from Eddie Carlton saw his off stump ripped out of the ground to leave Meggies 11-2. Young Callum Robinson, promoted from the seconds, came in at four and despite a number of play and misses dug in with Osmond to try and build a recovery. Osmond had looked reasonably comfortable and struck the innings first boundary in the 14th over off the accurate Craven. The pair had added 25 when Craven had his revenge with Osmond disappointed to feather a catch behind having ground out 15 in 46 balls. Robinson was beginning to flourish as a couple of cover drives got the scoreboard moving. He had made 23 when Biker pinned him on the backfoot to trap him lbw. James Windeatt soon departed to a catch behind for 5 and when Sri Lankan Omesh Wijesiriwardan perished first ball pushing forward Cleethorpes had slipped to 59-6. A second rain interruption took the players from the field but Alex Osmond (16), who had begun in confident mood, soon departed as Dan Cravens second delivery found the edge for Bradshaw to take at slip at the second attempt. Rob Griffin added 10 but when he fell to a turning delivery from Craven Cleethorpes looked dead and buried at 76-8. Harry Clewett and Jack Harrison then lead a minor recovery that was to take the score past the hundred. Clewett, in good form of late, found the spinners to his liking, as the pair eaked out the runs. Harrison’s unorthodox style was unsettling Harrogate as a number of sweeps and reverse sweeps kept the score ticking. Clewett departed for 17 when Taylor’s long hop saw Clewett find the man at deep midwicket to reduce Cleethorpes to 101-9. Ellis joined Harrison and the pair played sensibly eating up the overs. Harrison continued to entertain as the pair looked like batting out the 55 overs. Having reached 136 in the 54th over, Ellis (7) was stumped overbalancing to Biker’s short ball having added a crucial 35 runs for the final wicket. Harrison remained 33 not out to top score in 41 balls to at least give Cleethorpes a glimmer of hope.
Harrogate’s innings had barely got started when another rain delay took the players off again. A 25-minute delay meant Cleethorpes bowling with a wet ball as Twigg and Craven started in confident manner. With Omesh cranking up some good pace it looked a good contest. Twigg was first to depart with Omesh beating him for pace to trap him in front with the score on 21. Sedgely soon followed in identical fashion as the Sri Lankan got in his stride. When Craven edged for Eddie Carlton to take a great diving catch at second slip, Harrogate had slipped to 38-3 as Cleethorpes sensed an opportunity. Harrogate skipper Bradshaw fell to Andy Ellis with the score on 50 and when Alex Osmond finally managed to get a response from the umpire to trap Burcher lbw, half of the Harrogate batsmen were back in the pavilion for 66. Harrison replaced Omesh and kept it tight with a good seven over spell of 0/12. This enabled Osmond to build pressure from the other end. With Ben Biker intent on playing shots, Cleethorpes knew a chance was just around the corner. Omesh returned and in his second over produced a menacing delivery that Biker could only fend off for Rob Griffin to take a decisive catch down at fine leg with the score on 93. Osmond struck the next over trapping Sam Biker lbw to his first ball and in his next over removed Taylor with the tail ender panicking, slashing Osmond high to Callum Robinson at mid-on. Harrogate looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights at 95-8. Lindley batting at four had attempted to hold the innings together and had top scored with 39. However with wickets running out his attempt to win the game single handedly ended when Omesh took a pressure catch at long off to great delight from the fielders. And the brilliant comeback was completed two balls later when Osmond had Craven bowled to seal the 32-run victory. Osmond finished with stunning figures of 5/19 in 8.3 overs while Omesh’ pace had knocked over the top order. Omesh recorded 4/40 in 14 overs and with table toppers York surprisingly beaten, Cleethorpes close the gap to eight points with a game in hand.

Cleethorpes 2nds slipped to a disappointing seven wicket defeat at reigning champions Messingham on Saturday. A depleted side were bowled out for just 105 in 30.3 with only Skipper Paul Sunley (53) and Fred Lumby (22) offering any resistance. They failed to recover from a dreadful start as the top order slipped to 8-5. Messingham had little difficulty knocking off the runs in the 22nd over for the loss of three wickets. Lumby recorded 2/31 in seven overs while Sunley picked up 1/17 in five. The defeat means Messingham close the gap on Cleethorpes who remain top of the Lincs Premier league by a solitary point.

Cleethorpes 3rd X1 had a successful weekend winning at Haxey 2nds on Saturday before seeing their home match with Nettleham 2nds abandoned when in a strong position. Saturday’s win was built on a solid batting display that saw them total 208-4 in their 45 overs. Ben Marris (50) and Kris Richardson (69) added a century partnership for the second wicket on a benign wicket before Andy Haith added a quick fire 36 not out. Haxey never seemed interested in chasing their target and despite Cleethorpes setting attacking fields Haxey closed on 155-2 in their 45 overs. Dean Cressey was the only successful bowler with 1/31 in a marathon 16-over spell. The win gave Cleethorpes 15 points to consolidate their third position in the league. Sunday’s abandonment against Nettleham at Chichester Road came after the home side had bowled Nettleham out for 146 in the 35th over. Matty Owen again lead the Cleethorpes attack with 4/63 in 13 overs while Andy Severn picked up 3/14 in five overs. Simon Taylor’s 2/39 (12 overs) had inflicted some early damage and Lewis Markham wrapped up the innings with his first delivery. The only negative for Cleethorpes was a nasty eye injury to Jeff Todd who was lead from the field with blood pouring from a cut after failing to grasp a sharp slip catch. He was later to recover in the bar. Cleethorpes were able to claim ten points to round off a good weekend after the rains made conditions impossible.

Cleethorpes 4ths will feel they were robbed in their 11-run defeat at the Stamford Club against Immingham Blossom Way on Saturday. After bowling IBW out for 123 in 37.2 overs the rain breaks lead to the match being a time game giving Cleethorpes 32 overs to reach their target. Paul Nilsson rolled back the years to record great figures of 6/28 in 14.2 overs with youngsters Ryan Pearson and Kris Hall both adding wickets. Young off spinner Henry Tasker had shown great promise on debut with 0/25 in 8 overs. In reply only Bob Leafe with 44 could stick around for long with only Josh Latimer (14) giving him any real support. With the rate rising Cleethorpes lost wickets in the chase and they were finally bowled out for 112 with eleven balls of the innings left.

Sunday’s East Lindsey match at Holton le Clay was also abandoned with the Academy side 121-4 in 23 overs. After Josh Latimer (18) and David Mansfield (20) had got Cleethorpes off to a good start, Paul Sunley (52) smashed his second half century of the weekend before the rains put paid to proceedings.

This weekend sees Cleethorpes 1st X1 face two important clashes. On Saturday they face Scarborough at Chichester Road (12 Noon start) in the Yorkshire league in what is always an entertaining fixture. On Sunday they travel to Sandiacre of the Notts Premier league for a regional Semi-final on the ECB National Knockout having already seen off Belvoir and Whitley Hall of Sheffield. Cleethorpes 2nds' George Marshall Trophy clash with Barton has been re-arranged for July 3rd so they are without a fixture while the 3rd X1 travel to Alford 2nds in the quarter finals of the Bob Welton Cup. Cleethorpes 4ths are also without a match this weekend. Sunday sees the 3rd X1 welcome Owmby for a Lincs Second Division clash while the Academy X1 entertain Southbank at the Stamford club (2pm start).

STEELMEN'S FINE START WASHED OUT

By Graham Hackney, Cleethorpes CC

Cleethorpes were left frustrated by the rain on Sunday which forced the abandonment of their Yorkshire league cup Quarter final tie at Appleby-Frodingham. With a number of players unavailable, Cleethorpes travelled to Scunthorpe having made three changes from Saturday’s narrow win over Harrogate. Stuart Harvey, Fred Lumby and Patrick Hughes all came into the side against a Frodingham team buoyed by their fourth position in the Yorkshire league. Stand-in Skipper Bill Kirby won the toss and had no hesitation inserting the home side with the poor weather forecast threatening. Omesh Wijesiriwardana opened the attack with Jack Harrison and was immediately driven for four by Frod opener Matt Morland. Morland was to dish out further punishment in Harrison’s next two overs hammering the young paceman for four superb boundaries. Frodingham’s openers had taken the score to 36-0 after eight overs when persistent drizzle left the umpires with no option but to leave the field and despite taking an early tea, the rain gradually got heavier. This two captains decided to abandon the fixture shortly after and the the two sides will reconvene at Brumby Hall on Sunday July 3rd with the prospect of a away Semi-final tie at either Scarborough or Harrogate who were also abandoned on Sunday.

OUTCASTS' GOOD RUN ENDS

By Glen Sands

After having such a good run of form in May, Outcasts have now lost their last two games, the latest being by 74 runs at Louth (in Lincs League div one) where they certainly came off second best in all departments.
Louth chose to bat first and made a terrific start , racing to 32 without loss after eight overs before a sharpe shower saw the teams come off for fifteen minutes. On their return to the field of play Lee Freeman and Mike Searle took the Louth total to 89 before Freeman was first out , caught at mid wicket by Darren Clark off Alex Fletcher for a well constructed 44 then two wickets fell with the score on 96 , John Medler being bowled by Graham Clark for just two and Searle being caught behind by Richard Wroot off Graeme Fletcher for 40 , sportingly walking from the field even though the umpire did'nt appear to give him out. It appeared for a while that Outcasts were pulling themselves back into the game but two university returnees then took control for Louth , namely Zish Ahmed and Zain Siddiqui who batted really well to take the total past 150. Ahmed had reached 30 when he was well caught at deep mid off by Jason Whiteley off Alex Fletcher , then Dean Jacklin was out cheaply , caught by Darren Clark off Alex Fletcher again for just four leaving Louth on 172 for 5. Siddiqui finished the innings on 52 not out whilst Matt Hamilton added eleven , taking the final total to 198 for 5 from their allotted 45 overs , Alex Fletcher taking 3 for 61 for Outcasts although credit should also go to brother Graeme Fletcher who bowled well for his 1 for 23 and Graham Clark who picked up 1 for 24
The Outcasts reply began with Richard Wroot in excellent form but things began to change when Oliver Coulman was bowled by Matt Hamilton for five and he was quickly followed by Darren Clark , bowled without scoring by the same bowler as they slumped to 42 for 2. Andy Lawson hit one towering six but was then caught on the boundary by Ahmed off young spinner Jake Sanders and when skipper Russell Fletcher was fourth man out , bowled by Sanders for six the visitors were struggling on 64. Graham Clark was perhaps harshly adjudged LBW for three with the overall score on 71. David Hobson was another LBW victim having made just four , earning Hamilton his fourth wicket then the last real ray of hope was extinguished when Sanders bowled Wroot around his legs for a splendid 45 , leaving them in the mire at 85 for 7. Jason Whiteley and Liam McAnaney batted freely to move the score past three figures , Whiteley enjoying himself with some crisp leg side shots that saw him end the game on 27 not out but another Louth youngster , Tom Ryder came on to wipe up the tail in the space of four deliveries when he bowled McAnaney for 12 then followed it up by having Alex Fletcher caught behind by Mike Duell and bowling Graeme Fletcher two balls later. That left him with the impressive figures of 3 for 11 from twelve deliveries whilst Hamilton ended the innings with 4 for 59 and Sanders 3 for 32 for the Louth side.
So the Priorymen have seemingly hit a slump after making such a good start to the 2011 campaign whilst Louth appear to be on the up as their players return from uni and they climb the Division One table. Outcasts next match sees them take on Premier League side Cherry Willingham in the George Marshall Cup when they will look to find that elusive early season form that saw them make such a good start.
Outcasts 2nds entertained Division Three leaders Washingborough at Hirst Priory and they gave them quite a scare before losing by just 15 runs. The Lincoln outfit posted a total of 190 for 7 thanks chiefly to David Grieves who hit an excellent ton but the Isle side refused to roll over and gave their opponents quite an uncomfortable time when chasing such a big target.
Their reply was notable for the return to local cricket of former Alkborugh stalwart Jonathan Bramhill, playing his first match for over three years when called upon at the last minute due to lack of numbers and as the old saying goes there was definately life in the old dog as he hit a superb 56 to guide Outcasts so close to causing a shock. The seconds will travel to Barton Town on Saturday in the Bob Welton Cup and who knows if Bramhill senior has recovered from his first game in three years he may even feature again, provided the deep heat has worked it's magic that is!

S.O.S. OVER BRIGGENSIANS' FIXTURE

Efforts are being made to save one of the last of the old, traditional School v Old Boys' cricket fixtures, which used to be popular across Lincolnshire decades ago.
The Briggensians (ex-pupils of Brigg Grammar School and Sir John Nelthorpe Comprehensive) should have been playing a School X1 tonight (Tuesday June 14) on the school field, in the annual June clash. But they aren't!
However, the Briggensians' Association, and some of the regular Old Boys, are keen to see this historic fixture continue. And we hope to hold Attempt Two on a Friday night before mid-July - date to be notified through this website.
Efforts are being made to find a skipper for the Old Boys (one or two names have been mentioned but I'm too old to take it on AGAIN). .
Having said that I'm happy to take offers to play and will pass them on to the captain, once he's confirmed. Please email scoopfisher@aol.com or add your name, email address and phone number as a comment to this posting.
To play in the game you need to be a former pupil of BGS (pre-1976) or SJN - or a member of staff. Or a former student of Brigg Sixth Form College.

KELSEY REACH SIXTH ROUND OF 'NATIONAL'

By Mike Owen, South Kelsey CC

The regional final of the National Village Cup took place at Lysaght's, Holton-le-Moor, on Sunday between South Kelsey and Normanby Park.
The weather took a turn for the worse with the forecast rain coming down just as the two captains tossed up.
The umpires, Dave Chambers and Mike Knapton, discussed the situation with the two captains and the game went ahead in rain. The 40 over game was reduced to 20 overs.
Normanby won the toss and put Kelsey into bat.
Opener Steve Wright quickly got into his stride, building up his innings with a series of boundaries (eleven 4s and one 6) and amassed 86 with useful contributions from Rob Baty and Connor Hawkins, with a final score after 20 overs of 162-3.
Tea interval was delayed until completion of the game with the rain gradually getting heavier.
Paul Cowling, the opener for Normanby, played very positive cricket and regularly found the boundary with delightful shots. Kelsey's Sean Kirwin and Marcus Meadows bowled well in awful conditions and kept a good line and length which payed off with wickets falling steadily.
Cowling ended on 44 not out - hitting 9 fours - with support from M Knapton(21). Lol Waghorn (pictured here) had the best bowling figures with 3-18, Marcus Meadows had 2-16. The final score for Normanby was 105-6.
Credit must go to both sides in completion of the fixture which was played in excellent spirit.
Praise must be given to the two umpires for using common sense and allowing the game to go ahead when the two teams were willing to play.
Normanby's team, which has just joined the North Lindsey League, had a mixture of "old hands" and young, keen players full of potential and the future has only to be up for the enthusiasm shown on such a bad day for cricket.
Kelsey are at home in the 6th round National fixture on June 26th, 1pm, to either Shipton-on-Stour or Fillingley from the Leicester/ Warwickshire group. The final is at Lord's in September.

HARTSHOLME PUT TO THE TEST

By Ann Boulton

Hartsholme will face their biggest test so far this season when they entertain high flyers Bracebridge Heath in the Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League on Saturday.
Bracebridge are a formidable team this year with real strength in all departments, skipper Paul Cook, Nick John and Vikram Atri all approaching the 400 runs mark and Brett Houston and Matt Bradley getting among the wickets.
However, Hartsholme have shown a big improvement in their second season in the league and have learned the value of playing for points so the leaders will not be in for an easy ride.
Second placed Market Deeping will be keen to consolidate their position and to stop opponents Lindum climbing back up the table. The Lincoln side’s bowlers have been successful in restricting opponents’ scores but have lost form with the bat, though the excellent Deeping pitch may alter that.
Grimsby, hanging on precariously to third place by just one point, are at Woodhall who are fighting – with little success so far - to get out of the bottom two. However, Jack Luffman’s side are only two points adrift of Sleaford and know that their rivals face a tough battle when they take on Skegness at London Road.
Boston are the big threat to Grimsby’s position and the Mayflower team this week travel to current champions Bourne who are enjoying mixed fortunes this year. Fahad Masood is finding wickets far more difficult to come by now that teams know what to expect but the Boston batsmen will need to be on good form to keep him out.
At the bottom of the table, Nettleham pay a visit to Louth for whom Arran Brindle is on fine form and bowler Andy Carrington is proving a good signing.

SATURDAY FIXTURES
12.30 start
Bourne v Boston
Hartsholme v Bracebridge Heath
Louth v Nettleham
Market Deeping v Lindum
Sleaford v Skegness
