Outcasts Cricket Club would like to offer their most sincere condolences to the family of the late Brian Chafor, who passed away recently. Brian was heavily involved in the setting up of Outcasts CC and was a great character in cricketing circles throughout the local leagues.
Scorer Glen Sands said: "His passing will leave a heavy heart amongst everyone who played with or against Crowle's Mr Cricket."

BOB WELTON CUP FINAL PICTURES
Messingham 2nds beat Cleethorpes 3rds in the final of the Bob Welton Cup, played at West Halton Lane, Alkborough. Messingham, who lead division two, were dismissed for 192, in which Rob Talbot made 41, Adam Cook 34 and Matt Snee 31.
Mike Shelton took four for 42 for the first division Meggies, but they could muster only 92 in reply.

NINE MEN WENT TO...OUTCASTS

Outcasts were made to fight extremely hard by lowly Nettleham 2nds who through work, holiday and injuries arrived at Hirst Priory with only nine men.
On winning the toss Nettleham understandably chose to bat first and had reached 20 before they lost their first wicket when Alex Fletcher had Chris Smith sensationally caught by Liam McAnaney high above his head , the fielder ending up flat on his back after clinging on to the ball. Ash Graham was next to go , trapped LBW by Tom Sharpe for two and with 31 runs on the board opener Phil Brown was comprehensively bowled by young Fletcher having made a steady 18. Ben Connor and James Pickering took the total to 47 but had to br quite circumspect with only nine men to bat and it took an impressive piece of stumping by home skipper Mark Coulman off the bowling of Jason Whiteley to remove Pickering for seven. Kieren Baker hit one terrific boundary before he was bowled by Liam McAnaney , again having reached seven then Phil Cosgrove joined Connor and between them they took the Nettleham total to 100 Cosgrove in particular hitting some excellent shots. He had made 25 when he skied a catch to Oliver Coulman off Peter Tait , then Coulman junior picked up a rare wicket when Tait returned the favour to catch Luke Pickering for just a single and the innings was ended when Mark Coulman produced yet another outstanding stumping to take out last man Dobbs , leaving Connor on 22 not out and Nettleham 2nds on 107.
Outcasts reply to such a low total should have been relatively comfortable but it was anything but as James Pickering produced an inspired spell of bowling that almost left the Isle team red faced ! Oliver Coulman was bowled around his legs for four and dad Mark then followed for seven when he edged to wicket keeper Phil Cosgrove , again off Pickering. 22 for 2 became 22 for 3 when Pickering bowled Andy Lawson then opener David Hobson and Russell Fletcher steadied things with a stand that took the Outcasts total to 59 before Pickering bowled Fletcher for 12 , that being his fourth wicket. Hobson and Peter Tait then added 26 runs but just when he appeared set to guide his team home Hobson was well caught by Ben Connor off Pickering for 39 and once again Outcasts were being made to sweat. Tait and Andy Torr batted sensibly and had moved the score on to 91 when Tait was caught behind by Cosgrove , this time off Ben Connor , for 14 and when Tom Sharpe was bowled by the impressive Pickering who by now had no less than six wickets to his name. Outcasts needed some old heads to step forward and they don't come any older than Andy Torr and Jason Whiteley , Torr ending with 17 not out and Whiteley with the winning four runs that ensured them of 20 points.
So Outcasts will go into their final match at Cleethorpes on September 12th happy in the knowledge that they are safe in Division One but make no mistake Nettleham 2nds gave them one hell of a match before succumbing to the Priorymen.

GAP CLOSES

Bracebridge Heath closed the gap very slightly on Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League leaders Bourne, picking up 20 points to their rivals 16 after both had bowled their opposition out cheaply.
At Abbey Lawn, Bourne were all out for 142, Conrad Louth hitting 64 and Dan Milgate taking five for 44 for Boston. But Fahad Masood proved too accurate for the visiting batsmen, taking five for 41 as Boston could only reach 90 before the final wicket fell.
At London Road, Louth batted first but met Matt Bradley in good form, the Bracebridge bowler taking six for 14 as the home side were all out for 88, a total the visitors knocked off for the loss of four wickets.
Sleaford are now breathing down Bracebridge’s neck, having hit the highest total of the day at Augusta Street as they overcame Grimsby to move into third while their opponents slipped won to seventh behind Market Deeping whose game against Hartsholme was rained off without a ball being bowled.
Sleaford’s Dammika Gunawardena was the day’s only centurion, hitting an unbeaten 138 in his side’s 275 for five.
In an unexpected result at Richmond Road, Skegness went down heavily to Lindum who are back in the top six after hitting 206 for eight then demolishing the seasiders for just 75.
And Fawad Alam, playing his last game for Woodhall Spa before joining the Pakistan one-day squad, went out on a high note with 63 runs of his side’s total of 169 for eight before taking six for 30 to help bowl Nettleham out for 108, leaving them in fifth place and only a fraction ahead of Lindum.

The top of the table clash between Cleethorpes 5ths and Messingham 3rds was cancelled due to wet conditions at Chichester Road which leaves the Meggies two points better off than Messingham but there are a host of clubs within striking distance of them both as the season reaches a thrilling finish whilst at the foot of the table Barton Town 3rds beat fellow strugglers Marshalls Sports by 7 wickets , bowling the Gainsborough side out for 64 thanks chiefly to George Phillips who took 5 for 16 before Andrew Steeper guided Barton to 65 for 3 when scoring 30 and enhancing their hopes of avoiding relegation.
DIVISION TWO
Grimsby Town 3rds are assured of promotion now without even playing as nearest rivals Hibaldstow 2nds were narrowly beaten by Brigg Town 3rds in a real nail biter. Hibaldstow were bowled out for 106 by Brigg but hit back through Dale Coy to take them right to the wire , Coy taking an exceptional 8 for 30 only for Brigg to squeeze home by just one wicket , Ryan Musslewhite hitting 36 as Brigg ended their season with a win. Sadly for them they have not been able to avoid a bottom two finish as Outcasts 3rds won an important match against fellow strugglers Wheatley & Leverton who are now bottom of the table. Wheatley were bowled out for 137 by the Isle side , Matthew Teal taking 4 for 24 and Liam McAnaney 3 for 37 then Teal proved his worth when scoring 42 with the bat , along with 44 from Peter Tait as Outcasts replied with 138 for 5. In the one other Division Two game Alkborough 3rds climbed above Broughton 3rds in the table after beating them by 8 wickets at West Halton Road , bowling Broughton out for 114 , Brett Fish scoring 23 whilst Paul Mitchell and Nick Wingate took three wickets apiece then Mark greenwood made 33 not out and Sam Wood 28 as Alkborough eased to 116 for 2

Luddington's game against Isle neighbours Epworth was cancelled due to the wet condition of their ground but they still finish second as Misterton 2nds were beaten by Bottesford in the other match , Dave Kilgallon scoring 97 as Bottesford made 191 all out , Tim Sharpe taking 7 for 30 (including a hat-trick) for Misterton who were then bowled out for 148 , Jack beecroft top scoring with 54 not out as League Chairman dave Willey took 3 for 9.

GRIMSBY FINAL WILL BE FAMILY EVENT
This year's Grimsby & District Saturday League Cup Final between Harvest Moon & Phoenix will take place on Sunday, 29th August at the excellent Holton-le-Clay Cricket Club, on Tetney Lane. To mark the occasion the club are also holding a fun day with children's entertainment including face painting, a bouncy castle, various rides, children's karaoke & disco, followed by an evening disco and entertainment. There will also be food available including BBQ grub and a buffet for the players after the game. The bar will be open from 12 noon until late offering all the usual beverages including real guest ales.

UPTON LIFT TROPHY

Upton cum Kexby lifted the North Lindsey League Division Three KO Cup after a hard-fought victory over Luddington at Barton's magnificent Marsh Lane ground.
Luddington won the toss and found runs hard to come by as Ben Alsop and Alan Orton bowled very well to bottle up the Isle sides scoring opportunities. Graham Clark was caught by wicket keeper Hayden Green and Kristian Reed soon followed when he was bowled by Orton leaving Ludd struggling on 10 for 2 and things did'nt improve for them when skipper Gareth Parkin was caught by List off Orton for just six with the total standing at 18. Andy Lawson and Danny Taylor moved the score up to 46 before Taylor was bowled by Will Birkett then Oliver Saxon and Lawson added 31 runs before the impressive Lawson was bowled by Ross McLeod for an excellent 52. Steve Proctor ( 14 ) Saxon ( 13 ) and Matty Mellers ( 8 ) helped Luddington reach 112 all out but it was the Upton bowlers who should take the plaudits with some terrific displays , non more so than skipper Jimmy Snee who ended the innings with 4 for 2 from just 2.2 overs.
Upton's reply got off to an impressive start , although Graham Clark did have Shaun Metcalf caught behind by Steve Proctor in the first over. That saw Hayden green enter the frey and he batted superbly as he struck 41 in a partnership of 64 before he was caught by Clark off Arron Curry. By then Upton were in control of the match and despite some tight bowling from Curry and Barry O'Brien they eased to their target with just now and again a minor blip when Curry bowled List for 4 and Matt Green for 18. Matthew Mellers also nipped in with two late wickets , those of Jimmy Snee for 14 and Orton for 12 but it was left to home grown talent Spencer to hit the winning boundary to send the Upton supporters into whoops of delight as they deservedly clinched their first trophy of the North Lindsey League.
DIVISION ONE
Cleethorpes 5ths are back at the top of the table again following their 17 runs victory over Barton Town 3rds , Ed Carlton hitting 62 and Pat Hughes 59 for the Meggies who then restricted Barton Town 3rds to 200 for 9 , Nick Judah taking 3 for 28 as McInereny hit 55 not out and Andy Genney 37 for Barton. Caistor Cougars are back up to joint second after they beat Scunthorpe 4ths by 28 runs , posting a total of 224 for 5 thanks to 65 from Liam Wood and 60 from Harry Boulton , although Ian Snowden had them sweating for a while when hitting 107 as Scunthorpe replied with 196 for 9 , Tom Boryszczuk taking 5 for 56 for the Cougars. Appleby Frodingham 3rds are also well in the mix for the First Division title and their hopes were enhanced when they beat Messingham 3rds by 58 runs , Matty Fowler proving to be their man of the match as he scored 53 in their total of 177 all out before taking 4 for 19 as Messingham were bowled out for 119 , Cameron Fletcher scoring 43.
DIVISION TWO
Grimsby Town 3rds are within a point of confirming their promotion to Division One following a tough win against Alkborough 3rds who made 204 for 9 thanks chiefly to Craig Ross who hit 109 , Darren Burchall taking 5 for 17 before Harry Warwick replied with 89 and Ben Volley 57 for Grimsby. Hibaldstow 2nds beat Wheatley & Leverton by 5 runs in a high scoring match that saw Dale Coy hit 78 and Jon Taylor 59 not out as Hibaldstow scored 215 for 5 only for Wheatley to run them very close when replying with210 for 6 , Jon Loates making 54 and Callum Harrison 50. Haxey 3rds beat Broughton 3rds to keep up their promotion challenge , bowling Broughton out for 132 , Nick Crawford hitting 41 and Robbie Glentworth 38 , Oliver Tonks taking 3 for 19 then hitting 58 not out as Haxey eased to 134 for 5. Finally Outcasts 3rds climbed above Brigg Town 3rds at the foot of the table after beating them by 6 wickets , Brigg being bowled out for 164 thanks to Tom Sharpe's 4 for 65 , then Peter Tait guided the Isle team to 165 for 4 when hitting 60 not out at Hirsts Priory.

Despite being rained off in the 30th over at home to Market Deeping, Bracebridge Heath moved above Skegness into second place behind Bourne, who played 39 overs at Woodhall Spa, the home side reaching 133 for two with Fawad Alam making an unbeaten 61. And Sleaford overtook Nettleham, who were rained off at Lindum, to go fourth.
Oliver Burford made 68 as Sleaford finished on 220 for six at London Road where Skegness were then bowled out for 198, despite an innings of 96 from Paul Butler.
Boston missed the chance to pick up points when rained stopped play after the first innings which had seen Louth bowled out for 127, Mick Troops claiming five wickets.

STAND BY YOUR MAN
Alkborough Cricket Club's female followers have added a tour of humour to proceedings at West Halton Lane by donning T-shirts which pledge support to their menfolk.
Jo Ross - no relation to the established "Beefy" dynasty at Alkborough - is allied to 2nd X1 skipper and left-arm spinner, Andy "Chippy" Clay. She has been busy learning the fielding positions and partaking in the Alkborough tradition of walking the boundary.
At Jo's suggestion we hope to be able to photograph more of the Alkborough WAGs.

GAME OFF
Bottom side in Lincs League division three, Holton-le-Clay 2nds, have very reluctantly been forced to concede today's scheduled game with Scunthorpe Town 2nds, due to shortage of available players. Town will be awarded 15 points and HLC have five deducted, in line with league rules.

Cleethorpes Cricket Club will be holding its Caribbean BBQ on Saturday evening (7.30pm start). As well as the BBQ , disco and raffle there will be a cocktail bar with prizes for the loudest and best dresses/shirt. Admission for adults is £6 with £4 for children.
Cleethorpes 1st X1 produced their most emphatic win of the season in winning by 75-runs away at Driffield on Sunday. After Saturday’s home fixture to Castleford had become a victim of the heavy rains that fell on Friday, Cleethorpes travelled to Driffield in desperate need of a morale boosting win after losing their two previous games against Barnsley and Appleby-Frodingham. They got off to the perfect start after skipper James Osmond opted to bat in excellent conditions with Bill Kirby and Yaniv Judah adding 108 for the first wicket. Judah especially was in commanding mood hitting 63 in 81 balls before being harshly judged stumped when he appeared to have regained his ground. With Kirby once again holding a Cleethorpes innings together, Kiwi Peter Fulton injected some urgency with a fluent 45 in even time before being surprisingly bowled with 10 overs remaining with Cleethorpes a healthy 201-2. It was at this point that Cleethorpes took the game away from Driffield as Osmond came in and immediately set about the attack. He raced to fifty in just 28 balls with some brutal hitting and at the close of the innings remained unbeaten on 71 as Meggies finished a daunting 304-3 in 55 overs. Kirby had reached three figures in 168 balls with a towering six in the final over before departing for 102 attempting to repeat the shot.
Cleethorpes had Driffield in deep trouble immediately as Jack Harrison picked up two early wickets with Andy Ellis and Harry Clewett also claiming scalps. At 33-4 Driffield looked dead in the water but some gritty defiance held up Cleethorpes. Ellis and Clewett added further wickets after drinks before an entertaining seventh wicket stand of 102 removed all hope of Cleethorpes claiming an outright win. Fulton and Ellis added wickets in the final two overs to see Driffield close at 229-8 some 75 runs adrift to claim a solitary point while Cleethorpes take six points. Ellis with 3/56 in 21 overs was the pick of the attack while Jack Harrison could not repeat his fiery opening spell and finished with 2/40 in eight overs. Clewett (2/45 in 13 overs) and Fulton (1/44 in seven) were the other successful bowlers.
Cleethorpes 2nd X1 were without a fixture last weekend so focus fell on the 3rd and 4th X1s who are currently in deep relegation trouble in their respective divisions in the Lincs League.

James Osmond hits another massive six.Unfortunately, Cleethorpes 3rds remain bottom of the first division after going down by 51 runs at Outcasts. Lead by Jeff Todd in Paul Hewstone’s absence, they restricted Outcasts to 208 all out in 44.5 overs to claim maximum bowling points. Spinners Stuart Harvey (3/49 in 9.5) and Lewis Markham (3/69 in 11) inflicted most of the damage while Simon Taylor (2/31 in 13) produced a good opening spell. Todd and Mike Shelton also added wickets to set a testing target. However not for the first time this season the batsmen were not up to it as they fell away from a promising 145-4 to collapse to a disappointing 157 all out in 36.3 overs. Once again players got starts without going onto the big score. Will Abe (36), Ryan Harrison (32) threatened to get away while Callum Robinson and Ben Marris both added 23. But Harrison’s run out proved pivotal as they fell away to defeat to leave themselves some 25 points from safety.
Cleethorpes 4ths had a great win away at picturesque Owmby last Saturday, running out winners by 28 points but failing by one wicket to clinch a maximum 20 points. Having posted 152-8 in their 45 overs, Cleethorpes had Owmby hanging on at 124-9 at the end of their innings. Bob Leafe’s 42 had been the base of Cleethorpes innings with no other player making twenty but seven players reaching double figures. They were able to defend what looked a below par score mainly due to a superb opening spell from Owen King, playing only his second league game for the club. A spell of 3/21 in 12 overs ripped through the top order. With John and Ian Mansfield picking up important middle order wickets it was Sam Would that threatened to take Cleethorpes to victory as his 3/24 in nine overs could not quite clinch an outright win. However the 16 points will provide evidence they can survive in the division.
Cleethorpes' North Lindsey X1 crashed to an exciting six runs home defeat to Caistor in theNorth Lindsey league on Sunday. After Caistor posted 193-9 in their 40 overs, Eddie Carlton (59) and Kris Richardson (36) added 97 for the seventh wicket but fell just short in their pursuit. Stuart Harvey produced a brilliant final over to pick up four wickets to finish with 6/65 in 16 overs when Cleethorpes bowled. Carlton (2/79 in 15) and Paul Sunley (1/24 in 4) had also added wickets. Chris Wragg (28) had got Cleethorpes off to a steady start until the late fireworks weren’t quite enough to keep Cleethorpes top of the table.

HAXEY 2nds v MARKET RASEN, LINCS LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

Market Rasen Town Cricket Club 1st XI headed west again, looking to follow up last weekend’s win at table-toppers Messingham 2nds with victory at Haxey 2nds, but found the villagers in determined mood. Committed efforts in the field from both sides and two indifferent batting performances led to neither side dominating the encounter and Rasen grateful to head home with a three wicket win and 19 points.
Rasen won the toss and elected to make first use of a track that, in spite of the week’s rain, was hard and true. Simon Bunn and Karl Bierlein opened for the visitors and the Haxey batsmen found life hard from the off with Bierlein, in particular, tying the batsmen up. Rasen’s skipper made the breakthrough, getting the wicket of Steve Ryan who had been looking to take the run rate above one an over and could only hole out to Tom Corden at mid-on. The next over saw a sharp stumping by Mark Robinson, off the bowling of Bierlein, to remove Aaron Moody and Rasen were rolling, with Bunn removing Scott Barlow to reduce Haxey to 13 for 3 in the 13th over.
Haxey were in need of their middle order to dig in and Graham Skelton and Lewis Mann did precisely that. Whilst the pair never looked completely comfortable, they both unleashed some fine shots in between some stolid defence with Skelton, in particular, unfurling some punishing shots. The diminutive right-hander wasn’t afraid to take the aerial route, as evidenced when he sent Simon Bunn straight back over his head and into the corn-field for a maximum. Lewis Mann was finding scoring more difficult, but with the pair at the crease Haxey could look towards posting a defensible total.
Gary Bierlein was introduced into the attack in the 24th over and immediately unsettled Skelton. His second over saw Haxey’s number three attempt to play against the spin and he could only send the ball straight to Ivan Nash at mid on for 37, reducing Haxey to 69 for 5 with twenty overs to go. With the lower order now exposed, Rasen looked to run through the home side but found Lewis Mann in obdurate mood and he was ably assisted by a wagging Haxey tail.
Will Bradford came on to replace Karl Bierlein. The young seamer bowled at a decent pace and with some movement to end Gary Mann’s resistance, trapping the Haxey ‘skipper LBW. Paul Johnson joined Lewis Mann and changed the whole tone of Haxey’s resistance, putting bat to ball vigorously to race to 22 out of a 29-run partnership with Mann. The return of Simon Bunn saw Johnson’s resistance ended and when the Rasen skipper dismissed the watchful Lewis Mann, as ninth man out for 26, Haxey’s end appeared nigh.
Such thinking, however, did not account for Damien Hughes, who proceeded to flail his way to a joyous 15 not out and, with support from M. Garner, boost Haxey to 133 for 9 from their 45 overs. Simon Bunn finished as the pick of the visiting attack, taking 5 for 54 from 15 overs. With the late runs and some dropped catches, it was a surprisingly dispirited Rasen unit that contemplated the spread laid on in Haxey’s well-appointed pavilion and that slight hangover appeared to carry on into Rasen’s reply.
With Haxey fired up from their lower order ‘biffing’, the home side went hard at Rasen’s opening pair; Jon Stephenson and Gary Bierlein. Both Paul Johnson and Aaron Moody bowled tight, aggressive lines, with Moody bowling at a decent pace and, initially, Rasen found runs hard to come by. Frustratingly, if not surprisingly for followers of his form this year, Stephenson found his innings cut short just as he threatened to dominate. Having unfurled a couple of lovely on drives and taken 10 off the first three balls of a Paul Johnson over, the opener found his stumps splayed as he came too far across his wicket and was bowled behind his legs for 16.
Gary Bierlein also failed to ‘go on’ having made a start and found himself Moody’s first victim, caught behind for 13. Youngsters Tom Corden and Darren Salmon set about settling things down, with both timing the ball beautifully and looking quite comfortable until Corden was unfortunate to fall for 16, caught behind off Damien Hughes when there was perhaps a rather large hint of thigh pad. The wicket left Rasen 57 for 3 and the game in the balance.
Shrugging off the situation and the vital importance it had to Rasen’s promotion hopes, Darren Salmon continued serenely on his way, cutting and driving the ball with authority. Ivan Nash dug in at the other end and whilst he struggled to survive, with many of his runs coming via his outside edge, the pair – who both started the season in the 2nds – consolidated and gradually started to take the game away from Haxey.
With eighteen runs required and plenty of overs left Haxey turned to Aaron Moody to pull them back into the game and the youngster delivered, ending Darren Salmon’s fine knock, caught behind for 40 and then pinning Nash LBW for 27. James Needham took a simple return catch to send Tom Bradford back and when Mark Robinson attempted to smear Moody over cover, only to pop up a spiralling catch, Rasen had lost four wickets for ten runs and were 126 for 7 with only seven overs remaining.
Unfortunately for Haxey, Karl Bierlein rose to the occasion and led Rasen over the line without further delay or drama, with the win sealed in the 41st over. The victory for Rasen, coupled with Grimsby 2nds defeat of Messingham 2nds means that the Rase Park outfit now lead Lincs League 2 by a single point. All of the main protagonists in Div 2 (Rasen, Messingham 2nds, Grimsby Town 2nds and Caistor 2nds) have three games left to play and whilst the denouement to the division promises to be thrilling, it also means that two of the four sides who have dominated League 2 this season will miss out.

Committed efforts in the field from both sides and two indifferent batting performances led to neither side dominating the encounter and Rasen grateful to head home with a three wicket win and 19 points.
Rasen won the toss and elected to make first use of a track that, in spite of the week’s rain, was hard and true. Simon Bunn and Karl Bierlein opened for the visitors and the Haxey batsmen found life hard from the off with Bierlein, in particular, tying the batsmen up. Rasen’s skipper made the breakthrough, getting the wicket of Steve Ryan who had been looking to take the run rate above one an over and could only hole out to Tom Corden at mid-on. The next over saw a sharp stumping by Mark Robinson, off the bowling of Bierlein, to remove Aaron Moody and Rasen were rolling, with Bunn removing Scott Barlow to reduce Haxey to 13 for 3 in the 13th over.
Haxey were in need of their middle order to dig in and Graham Skelton and Lewis Mann did precisely that. Whilst the pair never looked completely comfortable, they both unleashed some fine shots in between some stolid defence with Skelton, in particular, unfurling some punishing shots. The diminutive right-hander wasn’t afraid to take the aerial route, as evidenced when he sent Simon Bunn straight back over his head and into the corn-field for a maximum. Lewis Mann was finding scoring more difficult, but with the pair at the crease Haxey could look towards posting a defensible total.
Gary Bierlein was introduced into the attack in the 24th over and immediately unsettled Skelton. His second over saw Haxey’s number three attempt to play against the spin and he could only send the ball straight to Ivan Nash at mid on for 37, reducing Haxey to 69 for 5 with twenty overs to go. With the lower order now exposed, Rasen looked to run through the home side but found Lewis Mann in obdurate mood and he was ably assisted by a wagging Haxey tail.
Will Bradford came on to replace Karl Bierlein. The young seamer bowled at a decent pace and with some movement to end Gary Mann’s resistance, trapping the Haxey ‘skipper LBW. Paul Johnson joined Lewis Mann and changed the whole tone of Haxey’s resistance, putting bat to ball vigorously to race to 22 out of a 29-run partnership with Mann. The return of Simon Bunn saw Johnson’s resistance ended and when the Rasen skipper dismissed the watchful Lewis Mann, as ninth man out for 26, Haxey’s end appeared nigh.
Such thinking, however, did not account for Damien Hughes, who proceeded to flail his way to a joyous 15 not out and, with support from M. Garner, boost Haxey to 133 for 9 from their 45 overs. Simon Bunn finished as the pick of the visiting attack, taking 5 for 54 from 15 overs. With the late runs and some dropped catches, it was a surprisingly dispirited Rasen unit that contemplated the spread laid on in Haxey’s well-appointed pavilion and that slight hangover appeared to carry on into Rasen’s reply.
With Haxey fired up from their lower order ‘biffing’, the home side went hard at Rasen’s opening pair; Jon Stephenson and Gary Bierlein. Both Paul Johnson and Aaron Moody bowled tight, aggressive lines, with Moody bowling at a decent pace and, initially, Rasen found runs hard to come by. Frustratingly, if not surprisingly for followers of his form this year, Stephenson found his innings cut short just as he threatened to dominate. Having unfurled a couple of lovely on drives and taken 10 off the first three balls of a Paul Johnson over, the opener found his stumps splayed as he came too far across his wicket and was bowled behind his legs for 16.
Gary Bierlein also failed to ‘go on’ having made a start and found himself Moody’s first victim, caught behind for 13. Youngsters Tom Corden and Darren Salmon set about settling things down, with both timing the ball beautifully and looking quite comfortable until Corden was unfortunate to fall for 16, caught behind off Damien Hughes when there was perhaps a rather large hint of thigh pad. The wicket left Rasen 57 for 3 and the game in the balance.
Shrugging off the situation and the vital importance it had to Rasen’s promotion hopes, Darren Salmon continued serenely on his way, cutting and driving the ball with authority. Ivan Nash dug in at the other end and whilst he struggled to survive, with many of his runs coming via his outside edge, the pair – who both started the season in the 2nds – consolidated and gradually started to take the game away from Haxey.
With eighteen runs required and plenty of overs left Haxey turned to Aaron Moody to pull them back into the game and the youngster delivered, ending Darren Salmon’s fine knock, caught behind for 40 and then pinning Nash LBW for 27. James Needham took a simple return catch to send Tom Bradford back and when Mark Robinson attempted to smear Moody over cover, only to pop up a spiralling catch, Rasen had lost four wickets for ten runs and were 126 for 7 with only seven overs remaining.
Unfortunately for Haxey, Karl Bierlein rose to the occasion and led Rasen over the line without further delay or drama, with the win sealed in the 41st over. The victory for Rasen, coupled with Grimsby 2nds defeat of Messingham 2nds means that the Rase Park outfit now lead Lincs League 2 by a single point. All of the main protagonists in Div 2 (Rasen, Messingham 2nds, Grimsby Town 2nds and Caistor 2nds) have three games left to play and whilst the denouement to the division promises to be thrilling, it also means that two of the four sides who have dominated League 2 this season will miss out.

Caistor Under 17s went on tour to Durham. They lost two games and won one.
Monday: Caistor 113, Marton 114-5.
Tuesday: Stockton 91, Caistor 92-9.
Wednesday: Caistor 176-8 (Lewis Jefferson 71), Great Ayton 177 -3.
There was a tour party of 14 players, five coaches and 11 supporters.
A great time was had by all with the players being a credit to our club on a tour well recommended to others.

Bottesford were 87-1 at drinks (20 overs). The first ball after drinks went for six. Then 16 yr old R McCleod took 5 wickets and student Mark Green took a hat-trick. Bottesford lost 7 wkts for 1 run to go from 93-1 to 94-8.
In all my years I've witnessed some collapses, but that will take some beating!

CALLING ALL OVER 50s
The now-established annual charity match, Ian Fletcher's X1 v Nigel Fisher's X1, will take place on Sunday, September 12 at Alkborough CC, by kind permission of Ralph Gray, Phyllis the tea lady, and others of importance at West Halton Lane.

OUTCASTS WIN CUP BY TWO RUNS

Broughton 3rds and Outcasts 3rds produced a thrilling North Lindsey League Division Two Cup Final at Alkborough with two young sides giving their all in a low scoring but nonetheless thrilling match played in exceptional spirit.
The Alkborough ground looked a picture despite the day's rain just 48 hours earlier in the week , a testament to the hard work of groundsman Ralph Gray and it was Outcasts who batted first infront of a decent audience which swelled further as the afternoon wore on. Jamie Belton was first to go , caught and bowled by Robbie Glentworth for just four and opening partner Oliver Coulman soon followed when Jake Parker took a juggling catch at mid on off the bowling of S Clark to send him back to the pavilion having made 15. Broughton were bowling very well , keeping things tight and fielding terrifically , a point proven when Peter Tait was run out after some sharpe fielding in the covers left him out of his ground. Outcasts skipper Russell Fletcher was next to suffer at the hands of the Broughton fielders when he was spectacularly caught in the covers vby Lewis Parker off Clark once more , leaving the Isle side struggling on 35 for 4 and when Matthew Teal was bowled by James Watson for two the total read 42 for 5 and they bwere in deep trouble. Garthorpe youngster Scott Buttrick was then joined at the crease by Charlie Mason and they began to steady the rocking boat with some excellent batting which belied their tender years. They took the score up to 69 before Mason was bowled by Parker for 12 as Broughton hit back once again then Liam McAnaney went to the middle and continued Mason's work as he too batted well to push the Outcasts total towards three figures. Buttrick had looked assured and calm at the crease but was eventually out bowled by Parker for an invaluable top score of 27 then Tom Sharpe and vice captain McAnaney took the score to 113 before Broughton hit back once again as Glentworth bowled the latter for 14. Broughton's wicket keeper Nick Dobbs produced a stunning stumping to send Sharpe back for 13 and the innings was ended when Alex Fletcher was bowled by Clark for one leaving the final total at 117 all out with all the Broughton bowlers having played their part in restricting the Priorymen , Clark finishing with 4 for 21 and Jake Parker 3 for 15.
After a superb tea provided by Alkborough's stalwart tea lady Phylis Mitchell, the teams took to the field once more with the general opinion that 117 was probably not going to be enough to defend but to their credit Outcasts battled just as hard as Broughton had earlier and even when Broughton had reached 58 for just one wicket their heads remained high. Nick Dobbs was the first Broughton man to go , caught behind by Oliver Coulman off Liam McAnaney for 14 but old heads Nick Crawford and Neil Simpson were keeping the runs flowing , pushing the singles and punishing any rare wide deliveries with aplom. However things began to change when another Garthorpe youngster entered the fray , namely Matthew Teal who produced an excellent caught and bowled to prize Crawford out for 15 and when Simpson struck a catch to Russell Fletcher at mid off from Teal's bowling having reached 25 the game was once again i the balance. Peter Tait came on to bowl , a cunning plan as he was taking the pace off the ball and he produced a terrific yorker to bowl Jake Parker then Teal picked up the fifth wicket to fall when bowling Lewis Parker for four and Broughton were teetering on 77 for 5. Shaun Clark was the man in form having made a half century only 24 hours earlier and for a while he and Rob Ward settled things down but Outcasts were not to be denied and Teal struck for the fourth time when bowling Ward for eight with the total on 85. Robbie Glentworth joined Clark at the crease and once again the flow of the game changed as the two batsmen appeared to swing things back in Broughton's favour , taking the total to 102 only for Outcasts to hit back once again when Tom Sharpe bowled Glentworth for 12 , leaving them needing 16 runs and Outcasts three wickets in what was now becoming a test of nerve for both teams. The standard of fielding in this match was exceptional and that point was proven when Tait produced an impressive run out to send James Watson back tot the pavilion for just a single with the score on 104 and a further two runs had been added when Sharpe bowled Lee Stothard which meant Broughton had to find 12 runs to win with their last pair at the crease. Clark and number eleven batsman Sam Benson kept calm in the face of some jangling nerves whilst the Outcasts team as a whole held themselves together in the field well , allowing Clark to take the odd single in the hope of bowling to the less experienced Benson but he was quite stoic in defence as they crept closer to their target of 118. Sadly for them however they fell just two runs short when Clark attempted to turn a one into a two so as to keep the strike only to be run out by a tremendous throw from Liam McAnaney which meant that Outcasts had won a quite dramatic Final by the narrowest of margins in what had been a quite outstanding game of cricket.
NLL Fixture Secretary Glen Sands thanked Alkborough for their hospitality throughout the day which was as ever exceptional and also gave praise to the two match umpires Nigel Fisher and Paul Goodhand who were outstanding throughout the entire match. He commiserated with Broughton who had put up such a great fight, then invited Outcasts captain Russell Fletcher forward to accept the Trophy on behalf of the Isle side.

Barton Academy Vikings won the title decider at Marsh Lane against Luddington and did so in some style despite losing the services of their inspirational skipper Jeremy Evans to a broken finger. Youngster Dominic Bishop hit an imperious 96 not out with Tom Palin adding 44 and Nathan Jones 32 as the Vikings made 249 for 9 , Jamie Arrowsmith picking up 3 for 55 for the Isle side who replied with 166 all out , Arrowsmith top scoring with 43 whilst Oliver Saxon continued his recent good form with 32 , Waller picking up 3 for 40 for the happy Vikings. Elsewhere Misterton 3rds eased to a 7 wickets victory over Epworth who were bowled out for 111 , Marshall hitting 67 for the leagues newest recruits as Darren Emmingham took 4 for 54 then Tim Sharpe scored 59 not out to guide Misterton home and finally Bottesford suffered a major collapse when in a winning position at Upton cum Kexby who they bowled out for 108 thanks to four wickets from veteran bowler Will McVey and three from Alan Watkins and at 94 for 1 they appeared set for a second win of the season only to lose Matt Baxter for 66 after which they slipped to 104 all out , four short of the Upton total.

Alex Tudor will be the special guest at the Area Finals of the ECB League Twenty/20 competition, to be held at Skegness Cricket Club next Sunday, August 22.
The former England, Essex and Surrey fast bowler is an ambassador for the Professional Cricketers Association and will be meeting spectators and presenting prizes on what will be a full day of cricket at the Richmond Road ground.
Lincolnshire ECB Premier League champions and 2010 cup winners Bracebridge Heath will be first up at 10.30am, taking on Wath CC from the South Yorkshire League. The loser of this match then stays on to play Northowram Fields, cup champions of the Central Yorkshire League at 1.30pm.
Northowram will then take on the winner of the first fixture at 4.30pm, with the overall winner going through to the ECB Regional Finals on September 5.
Admission is free for pedestrians and £5 for cars, which includes a programme.

ALREADY OFF TODAY
The phone's beginning to get busy with Lincs League cancellations this afternoon, due to heavy overnight rain.
Already off (at 11.07am) are the scheduled home games of Cherry Willingham (div one), Holton-le-Clay 2nds (div three), South Kelsey 2nds (div four) and Market Rasen 2nds (div four).
Mick Walker, who makes the umpiring appointments, has just told me NO games have yet been notified to him as cancelled in the Scunthorpe area.

Market Rasen’s Sunday XI have been enjoying a good run in the McKinnell’s Lincoln Sunday League Premier Division, having ascended to 2nd place in the table on the back of eight straight wins. Only a solitary loss at Boston’s Mayflower Sports Ground back in May blots their 2010 copy-book, but that game, along with two lost to the weather, means that the Rase Park outfit continue to play catch up to reigning Champions Cherry Willingham, despite having beaten them twice in 2010.
Last Sunday’s foray down the A46 to Scothern saw a strong Rasen outfit given a scare by the villagers who, fresh from their victory over Lindum the week before, didn’t hesitate to put Rasen in on a sporting track. Gangly seamer Joe Peatman and ex-Rasen star Jon Heath opened the bowling for Scothern in their contrasting styles. Peatman, as one might expect from someone standing head and shoulders above your correspondent, extracted plenty of lift and bounce from the wicket and bowled at a lively pace, inducing Graeme Bell to top-edge a hook straight to fine-leg. Jon Heath’s spin opened from the other end and his unorthodox action stymied Rasen’s usually attacking line-up, taking 1 for 29 from his 10 overs.
Whilst Heath was tying things up at one end, Dale Christie was grabbing as much of the strike as possible and was only too happy to attack. With Peatman dropping short too often Christie was only too happy to deposit him in the grain silos beyond the leg-side boundary, seemingly at will.
The introduction of Scothern ‘skipper, Johnny Drabble (3 for 34), turned the game on its head. Whilst Christie continued serenely on his way, smiting the ball to all corners of the picturesque ground, including one mighty six into the roof of the mansion off the bowling of Heath, which dislodged four or five tiles, Drabble dismantled Rasen’s top order. Bowling full at a lively pace, he castled Gary Bierlein with a delivery that scudded through at ankle height and then had Matt Rutherford caught behind first ball. Heath then snaffled Lee Chambers before he’d got going to leave Rasen in real trouble.
Christie continued on his merry way and found a willing accomplice in Laurence Scott. The young ECB star was fresh off a gritty 16 the day before at Lindum and found the bowling to his liking again, looking comfortable from the off. Having steadied the ship Christie, who had been given a couple of lives by the home side, finally perished, castled by Drabble for 72 out of 105. Scott tried to keep things going, but Rasen’s lower order imploded around him and led to his demise, caught at long on for 29 trying to grab what runs he could before he ran out of partners. Rasen were eventually dismissed in the 34th over for 131 which was well below their expectations at the start of the game.
With few runs to play with on the fast-scoring ground and knowing that they couldn’t afford to lose, Rasen turned to Graeme Bell and the paceman didn’t disappoint, tearing down the hill to terrorise the batsmen from the off. The first ball of the innings saw Jon Heath well caught behind square on the off-side by Christie as he top-edged a short ball that he’d been attempting to pull away to leg. The same combination accounted for N. Pearce, with Christie accepting a fine slip catch low to his right.

Bell’s penultimate wicket saw Christie back into the action, as the left-handed P. Lawson fell to a remarkable slip catch by the opener. A full-pitched, fast delivery from Bell saw Lawson do well to get an edge on it and Christie flung himself to his left from first slip and took what would have been third slip’s catch at ankle height.
Joe Peatman and J. Smith were the only two Scothern batsmen to come to terms with Rasen’s attack. Smith dug in and could only watch from the far end as wicket after wicket fell. The opener was the eighth man out, bowled by Simon Bunn for a stoic 9. Market Rasen 2nds v Brigg Town, Lincs League div four

Market Rasen 2nds have, so far, found their second season in Lincs League 4 a lot less traumatic than their first time around. With their young players benefiting from the experiences of last year and a bigger pool of players to choose from, they’d put together a fine run of form to win five of seven before last weekend’s encounter with Brigg Town.
2009 saw Brigg Town condemn Rasen to ninth place and re-election at the Lincs League AGM with some stunning late wins. 2010 has been a rather different tale for both sides, but Brigg visited Rase Park knowing that if they were to emulate Houdini once more, then defeat in the lee of the Wolds was not an option. Unfortunately for the visitors they ran up against a Rasen batting line-up in fine fettle and whilst their bowlers were able to make the batsmen work for their runs, particularly early on, the fielders were unable to snaffle the chances created that could have put the young side under pressure.
Jack Richards won the toss for Brigg and opted to put Rasen into bat. Dylan Hildreth did his best to make the decision work for the visitors, sending down an honest opening spell that was to last until drinks. For Rasen, Luke Richards dug himself in, whilst George Fussey (30) continued in his recent vein of form, looking to attack from the off and unfurling some rasping cover drives and cuts. Unfortunately for Fussey, his innings had, what followers of the side may recognise as, a familiar end. He greeted Phil Dewfall’s arrival with disdain, effortlessly lofting the left-armer’s first ball to the cover boundary. However, not content with the one boundary from the over, Fussey tried to smear a better delivery through cover and, with the ball sticking on the damp wicket, found his innings cut short by a fine catch by Danny Minshall low to his right at mid-off.
Andy Richley and Luke Richards (20) set about digging in and were content to collect the singles and wait for the bad ball. Richards’ vigil was ended by a fine over from Hildreth, who pinned the young opener in front of his stumps, only for a faint inside-edge to deny him. However, the all-rounder wasn’t to be denied, with the next ball pitched up and leaving the right-hander, presenting Matt Bell with a regulation chance that he snaffled.
Rob Chamberlin helped his ‘skipper keep the Rasen wagon rolling, soon getting into his stride and taking advantage of anything short, punching the ball off the back foot straight and through cover with comfort. The introduction of Rick Lancaster’s tempting away-swing was the only thing to upset Rasen’s middle-order rhythm as Richley’s stolid vigil was ended as he limply offered a catch to cover, having played far too early at a wide half-volley. Lancaster then struck again, inducing Chris Higgins to self-destruct and end a promising cameo by hitting the ball straight to square-leg.
At 119 for 4 after 30 overs Brigg were at the races and Rasen were simply looking to get a competitive total on the board. However, Chamberlin was now well and truly in and found two willing accomplices in Richard Limmer and Aaron Wells. Dropped down the order after a number of unconsummated starts when opening, Limmer played a perfect foil to Chamberlin, upping the tempo with some fine running between the wickets and some lusty blows. In particular a straight six that sailed into the top of the sight-screen at the River Rase end of the ground off Dylan Hildreth. With Chamberlin punishing anything remotely loose the pair added 73 for the fifth wicket in less than ten overs and it was a surprise when Limmer fell to the brothers Dewgall for 36.
Aaron Wells strode to the crease and picked up the cudgel with aplomb, blasting 33 out of a partnership of 41 with Chamberlin to take Rasen past 200 and set them on their way to an imposing total. With the demise of Wells, Chamberlin came into his own, shepherding the tail through the closing overs and carting the ball to all-corners, to finish on 85 not out and leave Rasen on 279 for 9.
Whilst Brigg grassed a number of chances in the field, their spirit and general bonhomie under Jack Richards’ unflaggingly enthusiastic leadership could not be criticised. Minshall, Lancaster and Dixon all claimed two wickets apiece and Phil Dewgall and Hildreth were unlucky to only end with one victim each.
Brigg’s reply began steadily, with the experienced pair of Gary Smith and Jack Richards putting on 50 for the first wicket in relatively untroubled fashion. Rasen’s opening bowlers struggled at first to make best use of the conditions, with the amount of swing on offer they perhaps tried too hard to find the perfect ball. Richard Limmer mastered the conditions first and, having consistently caused problems with his late movement of the ball through the air he finally garnered his reward, pinning Gary Smith LBW for a determined 30.
As with the game at Brigg Rec, once Rasen had broken through there was little resistance from the visitors. Limmer removed Jack Richards (23) and Matt Bell, both caught behind by Fussey to help him to figures of 3 for 23 from 12 overs. With Limmer causing all sorts of problems at the river end, James Greenwood got his first bowl in League cricket from the Gallamore Lane end and twice found himself on a hat-trick in the space of six overs. The young seamer pitched the ball up and let the seam and conditions do the work, claiming 4 for 11 from his six overs whilst Brigg capitulated. IBWEST CUP WINNERS
There were various presentations following the final of the Ibwest Cup at Cleethorpes CC on Monday night, in which Western OB beat Grimsby Pumas. Central to them was James Ibbotson, managing director of Ibwest, the sponsors, assisted by Steve Metham, president of the John Pettit Grimsby and District Cricket League, plus the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Coun Norma Lincoln, and her consort Malcolm Lincoln. League chairman Colin Kennedy was MC for the presentations, which included "Yours Truly" (as Gy League Cup Secretary) having the honour of handing the man of the match trophy to Stuart Airey for his magnificent century.

CRICKET LIFE CAN BE A BEACH!

Southbank CC are having a tough season in the East Lindsey League (ELCL), currently vying for the wooden spoon with Brocklesby Park, whom we face this Sunday coming. We regularly face ECB Premier League players and the standard of the league is getting higher. However, we have three/four youngsters playing and everbody getting a bowl or a bat.
Next season the ELCL will go to two divisions and hopefully we will do better against teams of a similar standard.
My season (and career) have been blighted by injuries. This season I broke a knuckle at Grainthorpe, trying to catch a bullet of a shot. Then, three weeks ago, against Sutton on Sea, whilst bowling off my very short run, I toppled over and twisted my ankle but carried on bowling and took three wickets. The leg went in pot for 10 days (fortunately not broken).
The only cricket I will be playing for a while will be on the beach!
This in a career in which I have broken a wrist diving into the crease whilst batting, had a thumb broken in the Gy League trying to catch Barry Hanslip, and a shoulder broken at Hibaldstow some five years ago trying a international-type dive on the boundary. Plus the usual muscle strains, bust lips, etc…
NF adds: Good to hear from Martin, against whom we always enjoyed playing in the old Lincs League division five. Here's a man whose approached to club cricket has always been first class, even if his ability, like so many of us, falls some way short of approaching that description.

MARSHALLS PLAY TOURISTS
