Grimsby-based PlaySport is running indoor cricket leagues on Sunday and Tuesday nights on a new multi-surface pitch. It's eight-a-side and £25 per team.
Publicity flyers were made available to club delegates who attended the John Pettit Grimsby and District Cricket League's pre-season meeting at Cleethorpes CC on Monday.

NO PRIZES FOR GUESSING
Andy Clay, of Alkborough, was really on the ball yesterday. Within a couple of hours of us emailing his club a list of their registered players (as held on the Lincolnshire League database) he sent through a shortlist of those we should remove, having left Alkborough CC, or retired.
Hopefully other clubs will find a few minutes to go through the list emailed to them and let us know whose names should no longer appear. My job as league registrar (with 50 teams to oversee) is not made easy by players who fail to complete the important "Previous Clubs" section of the official ECB registration form. If this is completed it allows me to remove a player from his previous club's list while adding him/her to that of the team they've moved to. But if this section of the form it left blank (as is often the case) we have to rely on 'yours truly' thinking where they might have been in the past. My memory is not bad - but we are, of course, thinking of taking human intervention out of the equation.
If/when we as a league go down the route of clubs doing all their player registrations online, it will be interesting to see what happens.

1) Updated master 2010 scoresheet. This has been altered to allow for the fact that umpires must now be marked in ALL DIVISIONS, and not just the Premier, as was the case up to 2009. Clubs are being asked to print off copies for all their home games and destroy last year's sheet.
2) UK Registration Form.
3) Overseas Registration Form.
4) Transfer Form.
If your club hasn't received the above, please email scoopfisher@aol.com so we can try again.

EXCLUSIVE: BARTON TOWN PROPOSALS

Attached are some images of the proposed clubhouse. The drawings have been produced by local architect David Ettridge of Ettridge Arichitecture. We envisage going to planning within the next three weeks. We held a 'meet and greet' night with the neighbours and received fantastic feedback regarding the building and the direction the club is going in.
Building will be for the community and will be available for not just cricket but other institutions within Barton and surrounding areas. A two-bay indoor cricket net facility would be offered to local cricket clubs for use, plus a gymnasium for club members, and 150/200-person capacity for functions/conferences.
The clubhouse has been designed with the environment in mind and will be built using the latest Green Technology, a field where David Ettridge and Energy Building LTD excel.
NF adds: What a great development this would be for cricket in the area. Barton's Marsh Lane ground falls within the area covered by North Lincolnshire Council's planning department. Once the scheme is submitted, Barton Town Council, and the general public, will be consulted - following which North Lincolnshire Council will have the final say on the application, plus any conditions (if any) thought necessary. Gareth tells me the development could cost around £750,000 and it's been decided to seek planning permission before getting all the funding in place. "We want to go places as a club," he says. It could be a wind turbine will be employed - perhaps a cricket development first - to help with the carbon footprint.

PROJECT FRONT FRONT UPDATE

It's close to a year since I first wrote to you about Project Front Foot. Much has happened in the intervening months. I am, in fact, just back from a second successful trip to Mumbai where I was able to deliver a further 140 kilos of kit to our various partners.
To summarise the past twelve months:
Due to the volume of kit taken to Mumbai in October 2009 and March 2010 we have been able to extend our original intent beyond Dharavi and place kit with an orphanage in Chembur along with three schools in villages close to Mumbai.
The hope, during an extended return visit this coming autumn, is to set up and run a series of coaching clinics at the Chembur orphanage and at those schools in rural Maharashtra with which we have links.
During my recent visit I was able to strengthen ties with the Indian Gymkhana Club at King's Circle. We currently run coaching sessions at the ground three mornings a week between 9 and 11. With an expected increase in coaches for the start of next season we hope to add a further morning session.
During the June to September close season, Chris Way and Krishna Pujari, who run PFF in Mumbai from their Dharavi Community Centre, will put together a fixture list of some sixteen games for next season.
We already have October 24 pencilled in as the PFF Big Bash: a sponsored day-long tournament involving teams from Dharavi and Chembur. The event will be held on the small grassed oval in the orphanage grounds. The format and number of teams has yet to be finalised, but is likely to resemble our version of the Indian Premier League.
While in Mumbai I was able to meet with the Principal of St Xavier's College, Father Frazer Mascarenhas. The hope, once the exam season is over, is that some of his students will help with the coaching duties at our King's Circle ground.
As we look towards another Kit 4 Kids appeal in the coming weeks, the hope is to take PFF into the neighbouring counties of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
PFF is currently the subject of a project by third year media students at Lincoln University. On my recent return from Mumbai I was able to hand over four hours of footage shot in and around Dharavi.
We continue to receive positive support from the local media courtesy of BBC Radio Lincolnshire and the Lincolnshire Echo. We remain indebted to British Airways for their continued support.

GY-LINCS LEAGUE DINNER - PART THREE

Washingborough won Lincs League division four at the first time of asking and spokesman Jonathan Bigham (extreme right on our picture) was kind enough to say to two league officials on the night how much they'd enjoyed it and how pleased they were to be in the competition. NOT LONG TO GO NOW
The Scunthorpe and District Cricket Umpires' Association held its March meeting last Thursday, when those who attended received their list of match appointments for the first six weeks of the 2010 season.That get-together clashed with the Gy-Lincs League dinner, meaning myself, Alkborough's Ralph Gray and Broughton's Bryan Simpson (to name but three) weren't able to get there.
As a result, Mick Walker, who does the appointments, has kindly posted mine...and they've just arrived today. I kick off with a Lincs League division two game on Saturday, April 17 - Alkborough 2nds v Messingham 2nds - at West Halton Lane.
As the North Lindsey League doesn't start that early I looked like being without a game the following day. But, as luck would have it, I've just bumped into Appleby-Frodingham CC chairman Mike Campion who has asked whether I'd like to officiate at Brumby Hall on Sunday, April 18, for their pre-season friendly against Goole Town.
Mike's asked me to try to find a partner. So if any members of the Scunthorpe panel are interested, please post a comment here now, call me on 01652 655134 or email scoopfisher@aol.com
If we haven't had any response by the weekend I'll start twisting a few arms.
Mick's initial list of appointments for umpires stretches as far as May 30. As always he's done his level best to ensure a good spread of fixtures and tried to balance long drives with matches closer to home.
For example, I'm down to go to Gainsborough, Haxey and Misterton - decent distances from my home - but he's also put me down to umpire in Broughton, Messingham, Scunthorpe and Caistor, which are much nearer for me.
Mick has also kindly given Lincs Cricket Latest a mention on the appointments list sent out to umpires in our association.
The App-Frod v Goole appointment is the second favour in a few days received from Mike Campion. He's pictured here during Thursday night's league dinner, and later very kindly gave me a lift home to Brigg. He attended the function with fellow App-Frod veterans Dave Morland and Ian Armiger.
B.E.L. STALWART DIES
Well over 1,000 people have already joined a special website forum in memory of much-loved and respected Brigg teacher John Allcock, who was secretary and a long-serving player with the Sir John Nelthorpe/Briggensians cricket team in the Broughton and District Evening League (BEL). He also played some weekend cricket with Brigg Town many years ago.John died on March 15, aged 62, after a long battle with cancer. A funeral service will be held at 12.30 on Wednesday (March 24) at St John's Church, Bigby Street, Brigg. It will be followed by committal at Woodlands, Scunthorpe.
The Facebook social networking site r.i.p Mr Allcock, created by Liam Mcintyre, describes John as a legend. "You were a great man who will be dearly missed and never forgotten," it says.
Many ex-pupils from the early 1970s to recent times have posted comments, including ex-Broughton and Brigg opening bowler Bill Eaton, who describes John as a "great teacher, keen sportsman, good man...big loss."
Brigg Town batsman Matt Mosey says of John: "You were my teacher, my colleague and my friend. In typical Allcock style you were fantastic at all three."
There will be a huge turnout for John's funeral on Wednesday. So if you are going, and particularly if you plan to take the car - get there early

LINCS/GY LEAGUE DINNER - PART ONE
Here's the first batch of what will be a series of updates of images taken at the joint Lincs-Grimsby League dinner at Grimsby Town's McMenemy's Suite, Blundell Park, on Thursday night, when the meal and service were both excellent.Guest speaker "Dr Cricket" Peter Davies, Professor of History at the University of Huddersfield, the chief guest speaker, is seen above, with well-known characters from the game in Lincolnshire in the audience, plus a few others on the top table, including Bob Welton and Colin Kennedy. Washingborough's table is on the far left, Hartsholme occupy the one in the centre of picture, with Market Rasen on the right.
'Yours truly' was the warm-up man for "Dr Cricket" and I'm sure many were grateful that mine was a short speech which included mentions of 'Chippy' Clay (Alkborough) and his Borat-style Mankini outfit, Jeremy Evans (Barton Town) and his painstaking accumulation of runs, Jon Jacklin (Scunthorpe Town) and the care he takes of his hair, and Nick Crawford (Broughton) and a rather unusual run-out situation.
We also reflected on how proud dear old Walt Blackburn (50 years the South Kelsey secretary) would have been if he'd lived to see Lol Waghorn's team earn their highest ever finish (4th in the Lincs premier in 2009). Unfortunately, we lost Walt early last year.
It was great to see veteran toastmaster James Jackson joining us again. He's officiated at more of these events than most of us have had hot dinners!

DON'T GIVE UP THE DAY JOB
Last night's joint dinner of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League and the John Pettit Grimsby and District Cricket League will surely live in the memories of those who attended. No doubt about that.
I'm doing a full day's paid work today back at the Scunthorpe Telegraph, so it will be tomorrow (Sat) before I get round to uploading the many, many pix taken last night. They include not only trophy presentations but also 'round-the-table' group images. I think we got round most of the tables. In view of the large number of pictures we will spread them over many days. So please keep watching. Sorry for the slight delay but the money-earning day job has to come first.
It proved a particularly busy dinner for me, having been pressed into service as second-on-the-bill, stand-in, emergency 'warm-up' speaker. Not to mention my usual role as back-up photographer to the man from the Grimsby Telegraph. The Gy Tel will be running a full report shortly - they had their own reporter at the dinner - so it's well worth getting a copy if you live in that area.
I will be supplying a report, and Lincs area winners' pictures, to the Lincolnshire Echo; plus images to the Scunthorpe Telegraph - at their request.
We get very good coverage in the local press and our thanks go to the respective sports editors for that.

LUDD HALL 25 NOT OUT
Cricketers, officials and umpires all enjoy visiting Luddington for North Lindsey League fixtures. It's a traditional village setting and they are renowned as a friendly bunch - on and off the field.
The cricket club uses the Village Hall for teas and this month sees that major facility celebrate its 25th anniversary, with the Hall opening its doors from 2pm on Sunday, March 21 for everyone to join in the celebrations.
The highlight of the afternoon will be the unveiling of the new sign at 3pm by Coun Stewart, followed by afternoon tea and a quiz spanning the past 25 years.
People from the area are invited to share their memories and loan any photographs they may have of Luddington Village Hall, hopefully including some of cricket teams past.
Luddington CC used to use the village pub for teas until its closure in December 2008; they now use the Village Hall and after the match tend to head off to the River Don at Eastoft. At that hostelry, mine hosts Gordon and Karen generally do the cricketers proud, especially on Thursdays (Snaith and District Midweek League) when they put on curry and chips. Just the thing to keep out the cold on chilly evenings.
In Luddington, there seems no sign of the Lincs Arms reopening - a sad reflection of the times in today's Britain where many village hostelries continue to lose the battle to keep going.
The Stewart Clan, of course, are well-known across Lincolnshire for cricketing (and hockey) connections stretching back many, many years, particularly with Normanby Park and in the Epworth area.

READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY
An important statement from the governing body of the game which is very relevant to cricket throughout Lincolnshire...and far beyond. We have highlighted particularly important bits in bold type for you.
ECB GUIDELINES FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS IN OPEN AGE CRICKET
The ECB has had several requests to clarify the guidelines issued in December 2009 on junior players in open age cricket. The intention of merging previous guidance documents was to clarify this area for clubs and leagues to assist them with planning and fulfilling fixtures so as:
• Not to place a young player in a position that involves an unreasonable risk to that young player, taking account of the circumstances of the match and the relative skills of the player.
• Not to create a situation that places members of the opposing side in a position whereby they cannot play cricket as they would normally do against adult players.
In addition the guidelines note the need for clubs and leagues to recognise the positive experience that young players should have in open age cricket and thus clubs should provide an opportunity for players to show their talents in an appropriate way.
Children who are just used as fielders will not fully experience the game.
The guidelines are designed to help clubs to decide when to select young players in open age competitive cricket and how best to help their cricketing development when they play within open age groups.
For example:
Under 12 age group players* and younger should not play in open age competitive cricket.
Under 13 age group players* can play in open age group competitive cricket, (i.e. players aged 12 and over) if considered by a qualified Level 2 coach or above that it
is appropriate for their development.
Under 13 players will need prior explicit written parental consent to play as this recognises the need for parents or guardians to be aware of the significance of allowing their young child to participate in open age competitive cricket rather than purely junior cricket.
Over 13 year old players are free to play open age cricket.
*Junior cricket age groups are set by the age of the player on the 31st August preceding the season of play.
These guidelines cover the selection and participation of young players in open age cricket. They designed to help clubs to decide when to select young players in open age cricket and how best to help their cricketing development when they play within open age groups.
They apply to boys and girls equally.
Guidance for Clubs and Leagues
All clubs must recognise that they have a duty of care towards all young players who are representing the club.
This duty of care also extends to Leagues that allow the participation of young players in open age groups in their League.
In addition the following specific requirements apply to young players in open age cricket.
1. Making the step up from junior to open age cricket is a significant event in any player’s cricket experience. Ensure that the player’s safety, personal development
needs and overall cricket experience are considered.
2. There is no definitive age at which they should be introduced to open age cricket but determine each case on an individual basis dependent on their ability and
stage of cognitive and emotional maturity to take part at this level, taking into account the requirement that no Junior Cricketers younger than the age group of under
13 can play in open age competitive cricket.
3. ECB Fast Bowling Directives and Fielding Regulations should always be adhered to for junior players in open age cricket. All young players who have not reached their
18th birthday must wear a helmet with a faceguard when batting and either a helmet or faceguard when standing up to the stumps when keeping wicket. A young player
acting as a runner must also wear a helmet even if the player they are running for is not doing so.
4. Any player in the Under 13 age group must have explicit written consent from a parent or guardian before participating in open age cricket. Clubs must ensure that their player registration procedures ensure that consent is obtained.
5. Provide an opportunity for players to show their talents in an appropriate way. Children who are just used as fielders will not fully experience the game.
6. Be supportive at all times for all forms of effort even when children are not successful. Try and put them in situations where they will experience some success
(however small) and ensure plenty of praise and encouragement.
7. Try and involve them in all aspects of the game wherever possible i.e. socialising, team talks, practice, decision making etc. so that they feel part of the team.
8. Children will often feel more comfortable and able to perform if they have a family member or friend also playing in the side.
9. Remember, children’s early experiences will remain with them always and will often determine whether they want to remain playing the game or give up and do something else!
10. Clubs and Leagues can apply more strict restrictions on the participation of young players in open age cricket at their discretion. It is strongly recommended that a parent, guardian or other identified responsible adult is present whenever a player in the Under 13 age group plays open age cricket. This could include the captain or other identified adult player taking responsibility for the young player.
NF adds: Let's have your views on what this means to Lincolnshire cricket. As an umpire and senior league official I must admit to being disappointed to see the above described by the ECB as GUIDELINES. What was needed was a very clear INSTRUCTION. That way all clubs and all competitions would know exactly where they stood. Following the above there may be suggestions that as the ECB has only set out a recommendation, it's not a firm direction to all leagues. My other concern, as an umpire, relates to (4) "Any player in the Under 13 age group must have explicit written consent from a parent or guardian before participating in open age cricket. Clubs must ensure that their player registration procedures ensure that consent is obtained." This does NOT say the youngster needs to show the match umpires his signed consent letter (as was once the case with helmets for U19 wicketkeepers). Instead it says clubs must ensure the player has consent - worrying for umpires who will now have to rely on that having been done by the club...but officials being presented with nothing in writing (unless the ECB hastily rewrites and reprints the team cards for 2010).
Remember that, in today's culture of health and safety litigation, match officials can be taken to task if a youngster gets injured.

In addition the guidelines note the need for clubs and leagues to recognise the positive experience that young players should have in open age cricket and thus clubs should provide an opportunity for players to show their talents in an appropriate way.
Children who are just used as fielders will not fully experience the game.
The guidelines are designed to help clubs to decide when to select young players in open age competitive cricket and how best to help their cricketing development when they play within open age groups.
For example:
Under 12 age group players* and younger should not play in open age competitive cricket.
Under 13 age group players* can play in open age group competitive cricket, (i.e. players aged 12 and over) if considered by a qualified Level 2 coach or above that it
is appropriate for their development.
Under 13 players will need prior explicit written parental consent to play as this recognises the need for parents or guardians to be aware of the significance of allowing their young child to participate in open age competitive cricket rather than purely junior cricket.
Over 13 year old players are free to play open age cricket.
*Junior cricket age groups are set by the age of the player on the 31st August preceding the season of play.
These guidelines cover the selection and participation of young players in open age cricket. They designed to help clubs to decide when to select young players in open age cricket and how best to help their cricketing development when they play within open age groups.
They apply to boys and girls equally.
Guidance for Clubs and Leagues
All clubs must recognise that they have a duty of care towards all young players who are representing the club.
This duty of care also extends to Leagues that allow the participation of young players in open age groups in their League.
In addition the following specific requirements apply to young players in open age cricket.
1. Making the step up from junior to open age cricket is a significant event in any player’s cricket experience. Ensure that the player’s safety, personal development
needs and overall cricket experience are considered.
2. There is no definitive age at which they should be introduced to open age cricket but determine each case on an individual basis dependent on their ability and
stage of cognitive and emotional maturity to take part at this level, taking into account the requirement that no Junior Cricketers younger than the age group of under
13 can play in open age competitive cricket.
3. ECB Fast Bowling Directives and Fielding Regulations should always be adhered to for junior players in open age cricket. All young players who have not reached their
18th birthday must wear a helmet with a faceguard when batting and either a helmet or faceguard when standing up to the stumps when keeping wicket. A young player
acting as a runner must also wear a helmet even if the player they are running for is not doing so.
4. Any player in the Under 13 age group must have explicit written consent from a parent or guardian before participating in open age cricket. Clubs must ensure that their player registration procedures ensure that consent is obtained.
5. Provide an opportunity for players to show their talents in an appropriate way. Children who are just used as fielders will not fully experience the game.
6. Be supportive at all times for all forms of effort even when children are not successful. Try and put them in situations where they will experience some success
(however small) and ensure plenty of praise and encouragement.
7. Try and involve them in all aspects of the game wherever possible i.e. socialising, team talks, practice, decision making etc. so that they feel part of the team.
8. Children will often feel more comfortable and able to perform if they have a family member or friend also playing in the side.
9. Remember, children’s early experiences will remain with them always and will often determine whether they want to remain playing the game or give up and do something else!
10. Clubs and Leagues can apply more strict restrictions on the participation of young players in open age cricket at their discretion. It is strongly recommended that a parent, guardian or other identified responsible adult is present whenever a player in the Under 13 age group plays open age cricket. This could include the captain or other identified adult player taking responsibility for the young player.
NF adds: Let's have your views on what this means to Lincolnshire cricket. As an umpire and senior league official I must admit to being disappointed to see the above described by the ECB as GUIDELINES. What was needed was a very clear INSTRUCTION. That way all clubs and all competitions would know exactly where they stood. Following the above there may be suggestions that as the ECB has only set out a recommendation, it's not a firm direction to all leagues. My other concern, as an umpire, relates to (4) "Any player in the Under 13 age group must have explicit written consent from a parent or guardian before participating in open age cricket. Clubs must ensure that their player registration procedures ensure that consent is obtained." This does NOT say the youngster needs to show the match umpires his signed consent letter (as was once the case with helmets for U19 wicketkeepers). Instead it says clubs must ensure the player has consent - worrying for umpires who will now have to rely on that having been done by the club...but officials being presented with nothing in writing (unless the ECB hastily rewrites and reprints the team cards for 2010).
Remember that, in today's culture of health and safety litigation, match officials can be taken to task if a youngster gets injured.
KELSEY REFLECT ON BEST SEASON

A well-attended South Kelsey CC AGM took place at the Hope Tavern, Holton-Le-Moor.
Chairman Phil Pearson reported how the club had transformed itself over the past seven years. Back in 2003 long-standing members were reaching the end of their active contribution to the club. Some moved away from the area whilst others retired. The club had adopted a new club facility at Lysaght's (area of outstanding natural beauty) where facilities were basic and the quality of the table and outfield just acceptable. Player numbers had declined and the fulfilling fixtures became an ever-increasing challenge.
Phil realised that if South Kelsey CC were to survive there would need to be a long and steady programme of rebuilding based on new committed members. Also ground improvements had to be a priority, plus a stable management team. The usual reaction is to find a quick fix but they invariably fail, as history shows, and lead to instant failure. For several years the progress was slow. Keeping the club together was thanks to a few dedicated individuals.
It was rebuilt on sound principles, keeping the spirit of village cricket and personal values intact.
The club is continuing to change and Phil sees another phase in its development.
If the club is to thrive it needs to have a core of active members who are prepared to keep driving the club forward and strengthen its status. Phil considers we now have such a group in our membership. He sees them further developing the club as they think fit.
South Kelsey CC's first team finished in their highest position in the history of the club (4th in the Lincs League Premier Div). The second team missed promotion on the last game of the season.
Player resource is high but further additions would always be accepted for committed players of the skill level applicable for either the Premier Division or Division Four.
The ground had received excellent scores from the visiting umpires for the table and the outfield. The equipment in use to maintain the pitch and pavilion facilities was modern but security was a problem that had been addressed.

EPWORTH JOIN LINDSEY LEAGUE

It was a generally unspectacular meeting of the North Lindsey League at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe, although new team Epworth were represented by ex-Outcasts man Martin Thompson who is their contact at present. His contact number is 07855 295523 and their email contact is pauline.garner1@btinternet.com
He did request that their first game, scheduled to be played at Belton Playing Field, be reversed to give him more time to get the wicket in shape which was granted so May 2nd will see Epworth travel to Luddington for their first game.
He also asked if there were any clubs out there with any spare equipment as basically they were starting from scratch so a set of stumps or spare cricket balls, etc would be greatly appreciated.
Bottesford will play all their games away, essentially meaning they will play each club away twice. That will mean teams having to provide two teas over a season in their Bottesford encounters but if it is going to prove a problem they should contact Dave Willey on 01724 841852 or 07808 888655 and something can be worked out.
Umpires fees will be £22 per match in 2020, with £33 for anyone who stands on their own.
The question of Under-13s participation was once again brought up as there appears to be another ECB directive that indicates they could still play with written parental permission but the umpires representative knew nothing of this new directive and it was also pointed out that our league rules indicate that no under-13 can currently play in our competition, a rule that can only be changed via a written rule amendment received and accepted at the AGM. Ultimately no change then.
