LASHINGS OF FUN

Brigg Town opening batsman Gary Smith suggests a link so Lincs Cricket Latest visitors can find out more about the aims of Lashings CC, coming to play at Woodhall Spa again this season (see earlier posts).
Only too happy to take up Gary's good idea, and here's your hyperlink... LASHINGS

PROGRESSING WELL IN GAINSBOROUGH

Things are progressing well with the Marshalls Cricket Club pavilion and work should be completed in early May.
Thanks go to our man Snelly for the further update on this welcome development in Gainsborough.

DISCOUNT 'DO' IN SCUNNY

Over the years I've interviewed a number of first class players at the annual Intersport Discount Cricket Show at the store at 92 High Street, Scunthorpe, including Craig White and Jason Gallion.
This year's will be on Thursday, March 4, from 5pm-8.30pm, and the management is promising the biggest-ever clearance with 50 per cent off discounted stock and 20 per cent off the new 2010 range. Telephone 01724 863536 for further details.
For some years my old Brigg Town clubmate Brian Markham ran this shop, which many North Lincolnshire cricketers have frequented down the decades.
No mention of a big name for March 4 on the leaflet the current regime sent me, but they do say "all welcome - brand reps available for expert advice."

WARNE RETURNS TO SKY SPORTS

For the benefit of armchair Test match fans along Lincs Cricket Latest regulars, details received from Sky Sports...

Shane Warne will return to the Sky Sports commentary box this summer for its coverage of England and Australia’s Tests against Pakistan plus the Ashes next winter. He will rejoin the likes of Sir Ian Botham, David Gower, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain and David Lloyd having made his commentary debut for Sky during the Ashes last year.
Shane will commentate on the following for Sky:
• THE ASHES: England tour’s of Australia beginning in November
• ENGLAND: Tests against Pakistan this summer
• AUSTRALIA: Tests against Pakistan in England during July
Shane said: “It’s going to be great to be back in the Sky Sports commentary box. There’s some really exciting cricket to look forward to this summer, not least how England and Australia are shaping up ahead of the Ashes. Commentating for Sky Sports during the Ashes will be special too. I had a fantastic time with the guys last year and can’t wait to rejoin them.”
Sky Sports commentator Sir Ian Botham added: “Who else would you rather have from the Australian camp to join us for our coverage of the Ashes? Shane was a brilliant cricketer and last year proved to be a brilliant commentator. He knows what he’s talking about and provided great insight into the Australian dressing room too.”
In his 15-year international career, Shane played 145 Tests and 194 One-Day Internationals for Australia, taking over 1,000 wickets.
Shane played in eight Ashes series, winning seven and taking 195 wickets in the process. As well as playing for Australia, Warne played domestic cricket for his home state of Victoria, English domestic cricket captaining Hampshire for three seasons, before playing in the IPL and captaining the Rajasthan Royals.
Sky Sports will be showing another busy summer of live cricket in 2010. Coverage will include England’s homes Tests against Bangladesh, One-Day Internationals against Australia, plus Tests, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 matches with Pakistan.
Sky will also show a record number of domestic matches this summer with at least 69 fixtures featuring each county at least three times.
Coverage of England’s tour to Australia will include each Test exclusively live and in high definition. It will be Sky’s seventh live Ashes series.

TEST STAR MAKES SWEET MUSIC

From Ann Boulton

Re the Lashings match (at Woodhall Spa - see earlier post) it's worth paying to eat in the marquee just to hear Henry Olonga sing. What a fabulous voice. Steve (Boulton) umpired the match the year before last and it was a fantastic day despite a deluge just before the game was due to start which reduced the overs.

FULL LINCS LEAGUE FIXTURES

After much hard work by Lincolnshire County Cricket League fixture secretary Glen Sands (pictured) and club secretaries/fixture secretaries our man in Luddington has been able to issue a list of confirmed games for the 2010 season.
The letters alongside the Premier Division matches indicate which umpires' association is appointing officials - S is Scunthorpe, L is Lincoln, G is Grimsby.

EPWORTH'S TERRIFIC TEAS

By Ann Boulton

Mention of Epworth in the Alliance takes me back to a game East Halton played (at that time at the ground in Epworth) at the start of one season. Teas were being provided for the first time by some members of a ladies' hockey team and they didn't know quite what they should give the cricketers. As a result, it was like a wedding buffet - sausage rolls, quiche, chicken bits, lots of sandwiches etc and loads of wonderful cakes. Laurence Blanshard had come along to watch and after the interval offered to do Epworth's scorebook with me doing East Halton's. We sat at the table with two huge pieces of gateau each which kept us going right through the second innings!

THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER

With less than two months to go before the start of the 2010 cricket season, umpires leaving Appleby-Frodingham's Brumby Hall cricket pavilion after last night's monthly meeting of their association were met by a snow shower as they walked along the boundary to their cars.
Hopefully not a bad omen for April 17 when the Lincolnshire League season gets under way.
Teams playing App-Frod CC this season will find things a bit different. Major building work is under way nearby, meaning a slight detour through the adjoining car park of North Lincolnshire Council's main Scunthorpe office block.
Appleby-Frodingham Cricket Club's outfield, square, pavilion and car park are unaffected but the vista has changed, with some of the distinctive trees near the entrance to the sportsground felled to make way for the council's new lesiure and sports complex.

NEW TEAM TO APPLY?

We understand Epworth are interested in putting a team into the North Lindsey League on Sundays. And we gather Belton Playing Field is being suggested as their home venue.
More may be revealed at next week's Lindsey League meeting at Brumby Hall, Scunthorpe.
If this all comes to pass it will be good to see another Isle team back in league action and another well-known village ground of the past returning to the fold.
Epworth had a team in the North Lindsey League for many years, and also a Saturday side in the old South Humberside Alliance.
Belton's ground, of course, hosted very good standard Lincolnshire League cricket, as well as matches in the North Lindsey League.
When you look round the Isle of Axholme now we have Haxey, Outcasts and Luddington (the latter being just north of the Isle in some people's eyes). At various times the North Lindsey League has boasted sides like Crowle Town, Keadby Power Station, West Butterwick and Owston Ferry, plus Belton and Epworth.
You may well be able to think of others from this westerly part of Lincolnshire. Beware, though, of including Misterton. Although only a handful of miles down the road from Haxey, it's actually over the border in Nottinghamshire.

DERBY DAY?

Brigg Town wicketkeeper/batsman Graham Day, aged 16, went for a trial with Derbyshire in late summer 1981, the county telling him he might be called back for an outing with the 2nd X1 at some point.
Graham didn't make it into county cricket but did enjoy a very successful career up to Yorkshire League level with Appleby-Frodingham. Having retired quite early, in recent seasons he has been persuaded to re-appear from time to time by the Scunthorpe Steelmen and Brigg Town.
I saw him in Brigg's Black Bull pub the other day (pardon the pun!) and told Graham I'd unearthed this information about his early career, long forgotten by me.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

Dr Peter Davies - widely known as Dr Cricket - will be chief guest speaker at the joint annual dinner of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League (sponsored by Readers) and the John Pettitt Grimsby and District Cricket League.
It will be on Thursday, March 18 in Grimsby Town FC's function suite (7pm for 7.30pm).
Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Huddersfield, Dr Peter was awarded £43,400 of Lottery money to launch a special investigation into the nature of village cricket in West Yorkshire. Sat in a deckchair studying cricket?! A hard life and someone’s got to do it!
His research took him on a journey through 100 local league cricket clubs in the vicinity of Halifax, Huddersfield and Dewsbury. It was an amazing and fascinating experience, and along the way he met:
Flirtacious tea ladies
Grumpy groundsmen
Eccentric umpires
And a whole host of cricket celebrities, including Joe Sayers, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dickie Bird!
And the historical items he dug up – bats, balls, photographs, and the occasional jock-strap – are now on display in local pavilions, libraries and at www.ckcricketheritage.org.uk
Peter and his team also put on 100+ cricket heritage exhibitions in local pubs, libraries, post offices, garden centres and supermarkets. The aim was to get local people interested in their local cricket clubs. Even if you were arrested by the local constabulary you couldn’t avoid the exhibitions…because one display was staged in a police station!
This unique Cricket Heritage Project has attracted widespread media interest. It has been featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC Look North, BBC Radio Leeds and Sunrise Radio, and special features have also appeared in the Daily Telegraph, Yorkshire Post and The Wisden Cricketer.
Peter has written several cricket books and made appearances on both radio and TV. In 2009 he established the University of Huddersfield Cricket Research Centre – the only such centre in the UK - at http://www2.hud.ac.uk/mhm/history/research/cricket

TOP KIWI JOINS MEGGIES

By Graham Hackney

Cleethorpes Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of New Zealand international Peter Fulton as their overseas professional player for 2010.
Fulton, who is nicknamed Two-Metre Peter, has played 10 Test matches, 41 One Day Internationals and 11 Twenty20s for New Zealand in an international career spanning six seasons.
He has amassed more than 5,000 first-class runs averaging 43.63 in 79 first-class
games and over 3,500 runs at 34.89 in 121 one-day games. He boasts a highest score of 301 not out for Canterbury.
The signing of Fulton confirms Cleethorpes' ambitions for the upcoming season and they will no doubt hope Fulton can produce the form that New Zealand compatriot Matthew Sinclair showed at the club several years ago.
Assuming there are no problems with the ECB endorsement and the UK Border Agency procedures, Fulton is due to arrive in Cleethorpes in time for Cleethorpes' opening ECB Yorkshire League fixture against Yorkshire Academy at Chichester Road on Saturday, April 24th.
Cricket chairman Paul Hewstone commented: "We are absolutely delighted to have signed a player of Peter's quality. This is a major coup for Cleethorpes Cricket Club and highlights our ambitions and intentions for the 2010 season. We finished 6th in the Yorkshire League last season which was our highest position since 2004; add to that squad a player of Peter's talents and I see no reason why we shouldn't be challenging for the Yorkshire League."
Cleethorpes face a tough start to their Yorkshire league campaign with consecutive home games against the top three sides from last season's Yorkshire League. Following their opening encounter with Yorkshire Academy, they face runners-up Scarborough then champions York within the first fortnight of the season. In the Yorkshire league cup they travel to Doncaster on Sunday, May 9th, while the National Knockout sees Cleethorpes entertain West Indian Cavaliers at Chichester Road on Sunday May 16th.
Cleethorpes defeated a strong West Indian Cavaliers side featuring a number of ex-first class players last September to take the club's Twenty20 trophy.
Cleethorpes 2nds open their 2010 season with the visit of Alkborough on
April 17th, while the 3rd X1 travel to Nettleham 2nds on April 24th in their
season opener. Cleethorpes 4ths face Haxey 2nds at the Stamford Club on April 17th for their first fixture.
Following the Cleethorpes Cricket Section AGM, James Osmond will once again captain the 1st X1, with Charlie Tomlinson appointed Vice-Captain. Paul Sunley takes over from Dan Tolson as 2nd X1 Skipper as Cleethorpes will look to better last season's strong challenge in the Lincolnshire Premier League.
Cricket Chairman Paul Hewstone will once again lead the 3rd X1 in their
defence of the Lincs First Division title and the Bob Welton Cup. Kris Richardson
replaces Kevin Blewitt to take command of the 4th X1 for their Second Division campaign.
Preparations for the season are already underway with senior nets being held at the Oasis Academy in Immingham from 7.30-9pm. All senior players are welcome.

VETERAN CONTINUES IN CHARGE

Veteran keeper/batsman Edwin Chappell is to continue for one more summer as captain of Owmby CC, assisted by middle-order strokemaker Kevin Bowring.
The West Lindsey club held an extraordinary general meeting to try to find a successor to Edwin, who missed some of last season through ill-health. However, we hear that when the central issue was "put to the floor", yet again no-one came forward to do the top job.
