BARTON JUNIOR NETS

Sessions for school years 5,6,7 and 8 - boys and girls - will be held from Friday, February 5 (6pm-8pm) at Baysgarth School Sports Hall, Barton, the cost being £2 per week. We have been asked by Barton Town CC to help spread the word.

UMPIRES' TRAINING

The Scunthorpe and District Cricket Umpires' Association will be staging a new year training course for those interested in taking up the white coat.
The first session will be on Monday, January 11 at 7pm in the Appleby-Frodingham cricket pavilion, off Ashby Road, Scunthorpe. Others will follow on successive Mondays.
Instructors are Barry Cook (tel 01724 864758) and Mick Knapton (tel 01469 530093) from whom further information can be obtained.

RASEN LADS FLYING FLAG

Watching yesterday's play from Durban I noticed we are represented locally with an England flag with Market Rasen CC emblazoned upon it. Unfortunately didn't quite spot who was waving it. Thought it might be worth a mention on your website.

CLARIFYING THE OVERS

The powers-that-be in London who run the newly-established Association of Cricket Officials have sent members a welcome Christmas present in the shape of a handy, laminated card setting out the new regulations for youngsters bowling during 2010.
Up to 13: Maximum 5 overs per spell, 10 per day;
Under-14/Under-15: Maximum 6 overs per spell, 12 per day;
Under-16/Under-17/Under-18/Under-19: Maximum 7 overs per spell, 18 per day.
Accompanying the card is a copy of Newsletter Number 3, which includes much of interest, including full-page articles about the 'Spirit of the Game Debate'. Michael Atherton (broadcaster and ex-England captain) wonders whether the spirit of cricket pre-amble to the Laws of the Game should be 'given out', while MCC secretary Roger Knight (experienced ex-player) puts the other side of the coin.
A matters of huge interest to all clubs, and umpires, up and down the country is the level of expenses paid to officials. So - at long last - it seems to ACO is to address this vital issue. It merits one paragraph on page 14 - but it's a very welcome paragraph.
The aim, we are told, is 'to search out a nationally-acceptable formula for match renumeration'. They hope to persuade all county boards and leagues to adopt a national structure. That shouldn't be too difficult. Why should clubs in some leagues have to cough up more than those in similar neighbouring leagues? And why should umpires get less in some competitions than their colleagues standing just a few miles up the road?
The present system involves local umpiring associations trying to agree how much to ask for from particular leagues and then making a suggestion once a year, which the competition may, or may not, accept.
It will be much better to establish a standard national expenses fee for ECB League games, and those in lesser competitions - linked to the number of overs in the innings. Those expenses to apply across the entire country.

EDWIN STEPS DOWN

Owmby Cricket Club is to stage an extraordinary general meeting in January in an effort to try and find a 1st XI captain and vice-captain after Edwin Chappell stepped down due to health reasons and no-one else volunteered at the AGM.

SEASON OF GOODWILL

Just to let you know...Lincs Cricket Latest has received a very welcome pre-Christmas £20 donation from a well-known club, although we won't reveal which, towards the continuation of our popular website.

COL IS 60 NOT OUT

Cricketers – past and present - braved blizzard conditions on Saturday night for a special surprise 60th birthday party staged in honour of popular player Col Mumby.
Still playing for Broughton 2nds in the Lincs League, batsman Col has also turned out (since the 1960s) for Elsham, Brigg Town and Brigg Sugar Factory.
Wife Liz organised the milestone event behind Col’s back, and when she led him through the door of Brigg’s Ancholme Inn – not far from their home - he was amazed to see so many friends, relatives and sporting mates (past and present) from football and cricket.
Among those attending were Dave Atkinson, Broughton seam bowler of so many years; Ralph Gray, Lincs ECB umpire and ex-Alkborough strokemaker; Richard Antcliffe, Grimsby Town CC first team captain, and Paul Taylor; Phil Glentworth, Broughton; Carl Taylor, App-Frod; Graham Hunt, ex-Brigg Town, Brigg Sugar, Elsham and Broughton; plus many, many more.
As a footballer, Col – still playing in the Scunthorpe League – was good enough to line up alongside Kevin Keegan for Scunthorpe United Reserves.
There were newspaper cuttings and photos on display featuring some of his sporting achievements. The fact he really enjoys sport – summer or winter – and always plays with a smile on his face is a major factor in why he’s lasted so long. Plus having a lot of ability, of course, which certainly helps!
Many of us have enjoyed his on, and off-the-field, antics down the decades, including the amazing good luck underpants he wore throughout a successful season (getting more holes in them as the weeks went by) and (when things weren’t going well) his send-up of Dad’s Army’s Private Fraser: "We’re doomed! We’re doomed! Aye, we’re doomed!"
And not forgetting the ever-present suggestions to "Bring Mumby on" to break a stubborn partnership with his flighty leg-spin.

GOING DIGITAL

We understand the East Yorkshire Alliance, in which Brigg Town 2nds and East Halton both play, is to switch over to an on-line system of recording its match results and registering players from next summer.
This is something expected to come under consideration in the new year by the Lincolnshire League.
Many leagues up and down the country are now 'going digital' and the benefits and potential pitfalls have long been debated and will continue to be discussed in the years ahead.
The East Yorkshire League has operated an unusual system (to us south of the Humber, anyway), the master scorebook for each game generating an old fashion carbon (remember them from the era of typewriters?), one copy being kept by the club and the other being posted to the league.

DYLAN TAKES OVER

Brigg Town Cricket Club held its AGM, with Dylan Hildreth (pictured) becoming the chairman, Dave Willey his vice-chairman, Lee Fielden continuing as secretary and Jack Richards elected the new treasurer.
The club will continue to offer competitive sport to youngsters of various age groups, plus running Saturday men's teams in the Lincolnshire League and the East Yorkshire Alliance, and a Sunday team in the North Lindsey competition.
Dylan, who takes over at the head of the club following the resignation of Robert Todd, started with Brigg as a youngster, then moved on to Appleby-Frodingham, for whom he appeared in the Yorkshire League and the Ridings League; however, he's been back at Brigg some time now and remains a very useful performer with bat and ball.
Dave Willey's career with Brigg became in 1974 - the club's very first season. But he's perhaps better known to many cricket-lovers for his connections with Bottesford Town, and as the hard-working chairman of the North Lindsey League.
Lee Fielden and Jack Richards have both served the club well - on and off the field - for many years, in various roles.

PASSAGE TO INDIA - UPDATE

Lincoln's Vic Mills has been out to India to the slum area being helped by Project Front Foot, through which cricket equipment is donated over here and taken out to impoverished people over there.
Project leader Vic has sent some images from his trip to Ann Boulton, of the Lincs ECB League, who has forwarded them on to Lincs Cricket Latest.
Vic was out there for five weeks and since his return has been busy spreading the good word through radio and TV interviews. If you want a look, he advises you try 'Googling' BBC - Lincolnshire - TV & Radio .... and then clicking on the item Cricket Appeal for Dharavi kids.
Project Front Foot is a "kit for kids" campaign, collecting old, out-grown, cast-off and second-hand cricket kit and equipment and taking it into Mumbai's largest slum, Dharavi. The second phase involves running a series of coaching clinics.

Saturday saw Cleethorpes Cricket Club hold its annual Awards Dinner for the 2009 season. Guest speaker for the evening was Lancashire Chief Executive and Ex-Aston Villa goalkeeper Jim Cumbes, who presented the awards and gave an amusing speech covering both football in the seventies and his role as Lancashire’s top man, while Charlie Tomlinson welcomed the guests on behalf of the club.
1st X1 players Alex Osmond and Bill Kirby were the main recipients with Alex taking the first X1 bowling awards to add to his two league awards as the Yorkshire league’s top bowler - the first time Cleethorpes have won individual league awards.
Bill Kirby once again took the main batting awards, both top run-scorer and best club average. Ian Bellamy took the club’s main bowling award to cap a fine season that also saw him take both the 3rd X1 batting and bowling trophies.
Other trophy winners included youngster Elliott Drinkell who picked up the 2nd X1 batting and fielding awards and John Zielinski who took the 2nd X1 bowling.
Other youngsters including Jack Harrison, Harry Clewett, Patrick Hughes and Lewis Markham also took home awards, with Joe Farmery picking up the infamous Duck trophy.


A new trophy, the Norman McVicker Clubman of the Year Award, was presented to Groundsman Howard Swain by the late Norman’s wife Rosemary for outstanding services to Cleethorpes Cricket Club (pictured right).
Veteran Bob Leafe also received a framed photo to celebrate his fiftieth season playing for Cleethorpes that has seen him amass nearly 35,000 runs (top picture).

£1,000-PLUS RAISED

Hibaldstow Cricket Club members held their presentation night on Saturday. This year it was combined with a Race Night to raise much-needed funds. As Mel Oades said of their groundsman: "Jon needs some more seed."
The evening was well-attended and just over £1,000 was raised - a tremendous result for a club that is run on an annual budget of typically less than £2,000.
Thanks, and a bunch of flowers, were given to the tea ladies and then awards were presented by visiting former chairman, Ian Wilks, to:

GOLDEN MEMORIES

Guest speaker at the joint Lincolnshire League and Grimsby League annual dinner held on Thursday, March 21, 1985 was Peter Parfitt, the former England and Middlesex all-rounder, whose subject was The Game of Cricket.
Mick Allcock (Broughton CC), who reached the rank of Superintendent of police in the Humberside force, replied on behalf of the guests, together with Tom Evans, cricket-writer, speaker and member of the Cricket Society.
The event was held at the dear old Winter Gardens, Cleethorpes, with the long-serving James A. Jackson carrying out the duties of toastmaster in his usual highly efficient fashion.
Grimsby Town received the Lincs premier division trophy for performances in 1984, with Louth champions of division one, Outcasts heading the field in division two and Claytons topping division three.
Grimsby 'did the double' by also collecting the George Marshall Trophy, beaten finalists being Market Rasen.
Dick Papps, captain of Keelby, went up to receive the Grimsby Saturday League division one trophy, with North Thoresby the cup winners; Ropewalk took the league title in division two; Exxtor triumphed in division three.
I've kept the menu card, on the cover of which is a list of officials for what was the 22nd season for the Lincs League and the 64th for Grimsby.
Presidents were Norman Maslin and J Carl Ross; chairmen, Ken Portlock and Colin Kennedy; secretaries, Bill Threapleton, Jack Swain, S. Metham, C. Eastwell; treasurer, John Morton.
Colin Kennedy - that great servant to local cricket - always asks 'top table' guests to sign his menu card during Lincs/Grimsby League joint dinners. Presumably he keeps them, and what nostalgic memories they must bring back of super nights at the Winter Gardens, and latterly Blundell Park, Cleethorpes (our new venue).

A SECOND POLITE REMINDER

There are still clubs yet to pay their annual "dues" to the Lincolnshire County Cricket League, despite the deadline passing on Monday this week.
The treasurer has asked us to give all offenders another gentle reminder. If you are not sure whether your club still owes, check!

MEMORIES RE-DISCOVERED

My seemingly lost scrapbook of Lincolnshire cricket memories for 1984 has now been rediscovered. Lots of interest there about clubs, leagues and our Minor Counties side.
We will post a few examples in due course - so please keep watching!
